This position is located in the Headquarters Office of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Directorate for Epidemiology, Office of Hazard Identification and Reduction, Division of Hazard & Injury Data Systems, Data Operations Branch. The Branch is responsible for the management, operations, and quality control aspects of a national data collection system involving NEISS and related data collection programs. NEISS is the primary data collection system used by the commission to determine the nature and scope of consumer product-safety related problems in the United States. The NEISS is a bi-level system in which data are collected at the first level through a network of statistically selected hospitals and a second level through the follow-up of selected reported injuries with in-depth investigations.

The incumbent serves as an analyst with responsibility for the management, operations, and quality control aspects of a geographic component of a national data collection system. The position is responsible for:
1. Overseeing the comprehensive operation for a specific geographical constituent of NEISS and other related data reporting systems for completeness, timeliness, validity and reliability in producing data used as a basis for estimating national product- related injuries and injury incidence and for testing findings and results through special studies and surveys.
2. Providing special summaries and compilation of survey report data for use by management in program decisions.
3. Traveling to hospitals and conducting oral presentations and meetings to confer with hospital administrators, physicians and staff to improve the reporting of the NEISS.
4. Recommending operating procedures and guidelines concerning the national data collections system; maintaining program communications concerning data collections systems and field support units.
This is an appointment under the CPSC Recent Graduate program. The program duration is one year. Upon successful completion of the program and at the agency's discretion, the appointee may be converted to a permanent position in the competitive service. Appointee must sign a Participant Agreement. Recent Graduates will enter a formal training program with a mentor and execute an Individual Development Plan outlining training requirements and program expectations. The entire duration of the Recent Graduate Appointment constitutes a trial period.
