You will will assist with Northeast Temperate Network (NETN) vegetation monitoring programs in Acadia National Park. This is a field intensive position, and incumbent will be required to carry a 35+ pound pack, work in all weather conditions, and hike off trail through rough terrain. Incumbent may be exposed to deer ticks that carry Lyme disease, biting insects, poison ivy and dense brush.
During the first half of the season, incumbent will work closely with the NETN forest health monitoring crew. While working with the forest crew, incumbent will collect data on forest structure and composition, regeneration, understory vegetation, coarse woody debris, and soil characteristics in permanent monitoring plots located across the three major park subunits in ACAD (Mount Desert Island, Isle au Haut, and Schoodic Peninsula). The latter half of the season will focus on the freshwater wetland monitoring program, and may include rocky intertidal monitoring. Other duties may include pressing unknown plant specimens, preparing soil samples for processing, data entry, and data quality assurance/quality control.
Area Information: The majority of the work will be in Acadia National Park (ACAD). At the beginning of the season, you will be required to travel for 2 weeks to attend mandatory forest crew training in Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller NHP in Woodstock, VT and Saratoga NHP in Stillwater, NY. ACAD is located in mid-coast Maine and lies within a transition zone between the boreal spruce-fir forests to the north, and the northern temperate hardwood forest to the south. Rugged topography, varied environmental gradients, and historic land use have resulted in diverse habitats in ACAD, ranging from marine to freshwater aquatic systems, and temperate hardwood forests to boreal and subalpine communities.
