These are Full-Time temporary positions not-to-exceed 1039 regular hours (about 6 months) in a service year. Positions may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs. Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement are eligible for rehire in subsequent service years. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Shenandoah National Park is April-October, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. The positions may be filled at either the GS-05 or GS-07 level. Pay for GS-05 is $16.00 PH; Pay for GS-07 is $19.82 PH.
Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

- Submits field reports which may include preliminary data analysis and recommendations for management. Provides preliminary field information, photographs and other documentation to support project clearance requirements. Serves as field liaison with other park staff, researchers and cooperators. Cooperates and coordinates with other field staff to assist with resource monitoring and management activities. Leads volunteers participating in backcountry and wilderness management or resource management projects.
- Maintains backcountry/wilderness management and resource management equipment such as backcountry camping permit stations and supplies, forestry equipment, cameras, binoculars, packs, camping gear, portable radio, vehicles, trail tools, maps and other field equipment.
- GS-07 positions also perform as the lead for the backcountry and wilderness crews to accomplish field implementation of the backcountry and wilderness management program.
POSITION LOCATION: Shenandoah National Park is located in Virginia, approximately 90 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. The park consists of approximately 197,000 acres of land, including 80,000 acres designated as wilderness. It also contains 105 miles of Skyline Drive and 101 miles of the Appalachian Trail. Annual visitation is around 1.3 million, which has direct and extensive economic impact on the surrounding area (eight counties and nine municipalities). The park's natural, cultural and recreational resources are of vital interest to local and regional businesses, political leaders, conservation and outdoor recreation organizations, and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT for GS-05 and GS-07: 1) Physical Requirements - These positions performs frequent strenuous physical activity including hiking up to 12 miles over steep, rough and uneven mountainous terrain into backcountry work sites and wilderness areas while carrying work tools and equipment. And, 2) State Driver's License - The duties of these positions require that you possess and maintain a valid State Driver's License as required by state law in order to operate government motor vehicles. Candidates who do not meet these requirements by close of this announcement will receive no further consideration under this announcement.

To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the federal service. Specialized experience demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park-related work. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include but are not limited to the following: park guide or tour leader; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations.

EDUCATION: Completed four years of education above high school (120 semester hours) leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or 24 semester hours of course work in a related field such as natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation managemant, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. You must include transcripts.

COMBINATION: Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. NOTE: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to 1 year of specialized experience. For example, 3 years of college study from an accredited institution (50% of the qualifying education) which included at least 12 semester hours of related coursework as specified above (50% of the related coursework required); and 6 months of the specialized experience described above (50% of the experience requirement). Add the percentages together; the total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts.
To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
