    This position is in the Senior Executive Service (SES), a small elite group of top government leaders. SES members possess a diverse portfolio of experiences including strong skills to lead across organizations. As an executive, you will influence the direction of innovation and transformation of the federal government and lead the next generation of public servants.

    The selectee for this position will serve as the Director, Air Vehicle Engineering (AVE) in the Research & Engineering Group at the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR). This position is the NAVAIR/Department of the Navy (DON) technical authority and organizational leader for air vehicle engineering/technical policy and strategy, accountable for key disciplines of structural design, loads, aerodynamics, performance, flying qualities, flight controls and mechanical subsystems and materials. The Air Vehicle Engineering Department provides extensive direct fleet support through the Naval Aviation Depots, as well as development of new aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicle systems via the Naval Air Warfare Center. Additionally, the Department provides acquisition engineering support and in-service engineering support to the Program Managers through the Naval Air Warfare Center.

    Responsibilities

    The successful selectee will perform the following duties:

    • Serve as the engineering executive responsible for the design criteria, development, qualification and related test/evaluation, certification, in-service support and life extension of current and future air vehicles for all DON/United States Marine Corps fixed and rotary wing aircraft programs, as well as unmanned air vehicles.
    • Represent DON interests with the private sector as well as other government services and agencies in air vehicle technical authority leadership areas. Provide technical oversight and leadership of engineering disciplines for science and technology development, systems development, acquisition, and in-service support of all naval aviation platforms and equipment.
    • Lead a national Department responsible for providing direct leadership oversight for the people, processes, and facilities to a workforce of approximately 1,370 civilian/ military/ contract personnel located at 7 geographically dispersed locations.
    • Manage an operating budget of over $250M, influencing over $30B dollars in DON investments.
    • Report directly to NAVAIR's Deputy Assistant Commander for Research and Engineering (a Tier 3 SES).
