This position is located in the Office of the General Counsel (OGC) of the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG), an independent Federal Agency of the U.S. Government. The incumbent serves as an Assistant General Counsel in the Litigation Practice Group which handles the Employment Law, Labor Law, and Litigation practice within the OGC.
The Agency is led by a Chief Executive Officer and a multi-member Board, which includes the Secretary of State. The incumbent's role includes providing legal advice to these senior officials; to the head of the Voice of America and other major international news-media organizations; and journalists and staff around the world. An overview of our office's exciting practice, and the duties of this position are provided in the next section (under "Responsibilities").
INTRODUCTION TO AGENCY: The BBG operates one of the world's largest news media networks, bringing news and information to a weekly audience of over 278 million people worldwide, in over 100 countries in over 60 languages via radio, television, Internet, and social media. The BBG network is comprised of five major international broadcasters: the Voice of America (VOA), Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Radio and Television Marti, Radio Free Asia, and the Middle East Broadcast Networks. Our networks carry out a shared mission vital to U.S. national interests: "to inform, engage, and connect people around the world in support of freedom and democracy." Our agency is unique in the federal government: we create, produce, and broadcast news around the world. We do so for people whose governments limit or block their people's access to a free press, or who simply lack sources of reliable news on events in their own countries, the United States, or around the world. A statutory firewall ensures that Agency has editorial independence, meaning our news is free from any partisan or political interference, and adheres to the "highest professional standards" of journalism. We employ journalists and other incredible staff from around the world.
