Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.
Area Information: Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park (HAVO) is located on the island of Hawai'i, on the southeastern edge of the island, in the districts of Ka'u and Puna, between the towns of Hilo to the northeast and Kailua-Kona to the northwest. It is located 2,500 airline miles from the continental United States and over 250 miles from Honolulu on the island of Oahu, the major business, government, and industrial supply center for the state. The park was established in 1916 and encompasses two of the most active volcanoes in the world, Kilauea and Mauna Loa; a diverse geography that ranges from sea level to 13,677 feet in elevation; and protects rich biodiversity and Native Hawaiian culture. The park includes 330,000 acres of land with approximately 130,000 acres of designated wilderness. The mission of the park is to protect, conserve and study the volcanic landscapes and associated natural and cultural resources and processes, and to facilitate safe public access to active volcanism, diverse geographic settings and wilderness for public education and enjoyment.
Special Consideration: The island of Hawaii is subject to high concentrations of volcanic fumes, especially sulfur dioxide gasses. The fumes are known to be hazardous to an unborn fetus, and persons with heart and respiratory problems. The Kona coast primarily experiences vog conditions throughout the year, and occasionally eastern Hawaii Island and other Hawaiian islands. Long-term effects on normal healthy persons are unknown.

Employee performs a variety of park maintenance and repair duties on buildings, structures, facilities, roads, and grounds. Makes repairs to buildings and structures. Prepares surfaces for painting by sanding; paints ceilings walls and doors. Repairs and replaces standard plumbing fittings, clears simple stoppages, replaces washers in faucets. Replaces fuses, light bulbs. Removes trash and debris from roadway and roadsides. Operates heavy riding and walking-type lawn mowers. Operates and maintains park's water treatment and distribution systems.
There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.
Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate, and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions.
Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment; paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks, and biting insects.
Telework: The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are not suitable for telework.
