The Office of Inspector General (OIG), works within the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to promote efficiency and effectiveness, and prevent or stop waste, fraud and abuse in departmental programs. We do this through audits and investigations. OIG also consults with Congress about programs in progress and proposed new laws and regulations. The Inspector General Act of 1978 gives the Office of Inspector General autonomy to do its work without interference. OIG carries out its mission by issuing audit reports, evaluations, management advisory, and other products with findings and recommendations to improve program delivery and performance.

Serves as the Supervisory Statistician responsible for planning, conducting, and supervising statistical and other technical analyses of operations and activities in all modes of transportation.
Serves as a technical expert in the areas of statistical techniques for audits (evaluations), investigations and administration and management involving programs, activities, and operations.
Provides expert consultation and advice to agency management and staff regarding use, contributions, and limitations of statistical information and survey instruments relative to audit/review work being performed.
Provides expert direction and guidance to audit staff in conducting statistical analyses relevant to audits and evaluations.
Determines and applies appropriate/complex techniques to designing data sampling plans or survey instruments, selecting samples, the analysis of sampling/survey results, and advising the audit (evaluation) teams of conclusions that can be drawn from the analyses.
Serves as an expert advisor in the planning process for audits and investigations including providing pre-audit and pre-investigations statistical expertise, and providing guidance and counseling concerning data availability, sample selection and analysis techniques on a continuing basis to identify and enhance operational efficiency.
Uses computer software packages such as SPSS, IDEA, MS Access, MS Excel and ACL to conduct statistical analyses, compute sample sizes, select samples, project sample results, program mathematical calculations, perform data transformations and graphing.
Prepares statistical sampling methodology plans, documentation for audit work papers, drafts report sections, and develops presentations detailing the methodologies used and projections computed in language comprehensible to a non technical audience.
Directs, plans, sets priorities and reviews the work of subordinates while simultaneously directing audit teams on other assignments who are not experts in statistical and survey analyses.

Basic Requirements
A. Degree: that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc.
*Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements should be given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing.

B. Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.
