The Applied Engineering and Technology Directorate (AETD), Software Engineering Division, Science Data Systems Branch (Code 586) is seeking for an experienced individual to serve as the Branch Head. The Science Data Systems Branch develops and/or provides consultative services for developing data systems to support Earth and space science missions. The Branch personnel participate in teams with flight projects and principal investigators in the Earth and Space Sciences Directorates to develop systems for operational data capture, level zero and higher level data processing, and data archival, distribution and information management. The systems may include various levels of processing science and telemetry data starting from the point of their reaching the ground until they are delivered to scientific users for analysis.

As a Supervisory Computer Engineer, specializing in Ground Data Systems, you will provide administrative and technical supervision necessary for accomplishing the work of the unit. Establish guidelines and performance expectations for staff members, which are clearly communicated through the formal employee performance management system. Observe workers' performance; demonstrate and conduct work performance critiques. Resolve informal complaints and grievances. Develop work improvement plans, recommending personnel actions as necessary. Provide advice and counsel to workers related to work and administrative matters.
You will as an expert authority and internationally recognized expert responsible for projects or program segments that are of vital importance to national and international efforts. Direct, manage, and lead the development and implementation of highly complex and sophisticated computer-based subsystems, and/or instruments and sensor systems for multi-million dollar projects. System are state-of-the-art and may contain simulation techniques, experiments, and/or laboratory tests that are infeasible or inconclusive. Provide technical leadership in defining systems concepts, objectives and requirements, planning and design, and monitoring integration and testing. Integrate and coordinate the efforts of agency personnel with those of contractors in research, design and development, and engineering. You will have far-reaching effect on the work and programs of extensive engineering activities. Provide authoritative technical decisions, advice, and consultation to contractors on variables and unknowns affecting planning, coordination, and critical problems with respect to safety, costs, and economics.
