TOUR OF DUTY: Tuesday through Saturday – 6:30am to 3:00pm
The position is organizationally located in the Architect of the Capitol (AOC), Office of the Chief Operating Officer, Superintendent Capitol Grounds, Maintenance Division, Plumbing Branch. The position serves as a Plumbing Helper and performs a variety of duties, including Trash Truck Helper on Saturdays, digging trenches for landscape sprinkler systems, replacing sprinkler heads, cleaning fountains and pools and clearing landscape drains.
The position is considered essential and is required to report during emergency situations.
MAJOR DUTIES:
Plumbing Tasks
The work involves making repairs that can be accomplished by removing, cleaning, replacing, packing and sealing defective parts of irrigation drainage systems such as dirty traps, sections of broken tile pipe and leaky drains. Modifies and repairs new and existing utility sewer lines, water lines, disposal systems and fire extinguisher sprinkler heads.
The job involves learning such trade practices and skills as the proper usage of tools and equipment of the trade; the order of assembling parts and what tools and equipment are needed; how to read blueprints, sketches and technical manuals to understand the functions of the parts or systems, to plan and lay out work and to aid in finding faulty parts or systems; repair techniques to be used including methods used in getting the right fit or tolerances; how to make adjustments and calibrations; and how to rebuild and make parts.
Receives work orders, oral instructions and sketches that provide specific information on the work to be done, location of the work site, the kind of repairs to be made and the materials and tools that will be needed.
Installs, maintains and repairs complex landscape irrigation systems ranging from electronically controlled large output heads to drip irrigation tape. This includes instructions on how to repair programmable valves, timing and water control flow valves.
Assists in laying out and installing piping and water delivery components; backflow prevention components; mechanical, hydraulic and electrical irrigation controls; and other irrigation system components.
Works with gardening teams to manage overall irrigation water use. Provides direction to the end users on system use, scheduling, maintenance and water conservation.
Responsible to maintain the historic exterior ornamental fountains throughout the Capitol campus. This process includes seasonal startups and shut downs as well as cleaning and maintenance through the season.
Assists with snow removal operations during weather closures.
Trash Collection and Recycling
Performs trash and recycling collection duties with Trash Truck Operator on Saturdays. As a helper, performs pick-up and tipping of trash receptacles into trash and/or recycling portals on vehicle throughout the Capitol Complex designated route.
General Labor Tasks
Performs laboring tasks that require moderately heavy physical effort and that involve a number of successive steps or processes. Handles hazardous materials and substances, picking up and removing items and chemicals deposited into waste receptacles by the general public.
