These positions are temporary, have a Not-to-Exceed date and will be filled for up to 6 months. The appointment may also end early due to lack of work or funds.
These positions are located within a National Forest. Incumbent assist scientists or higher graded technicians with conducting ecological research on forest and/or rangeland ecosystems.
The number and location of positions to be filled will be dependent upon individual until needs.
Some positions will have varying work schedules. Some positions may have irregular and protracted hours of work. Tours of duty include full-time or less than full-time and will involve working weekends or irregular work hours.
The duty station for this position will be at one of the duty locations listed in this announcement. Final determination of duty station will be made by the selecting official at the time of job offer. Salary range as shown is the locality pay area of Rest of U.S. (RUS). The incumbent performs technical assignments consisting of routine laboratory and/or field experiments that require the use of accepted, standardized laboratory or field practices.
Assists in the acquisition of field data by measuring and recording pertinent biological information peculiar to the specific assignment. The assignment involves performance of a series of related technical tasks, which must be completed according to a predetermined and established routine. Tabulates and orders data as directed and prepares data for computer use.
Assists in the layout of experimental plots by taking measurements and marking corners and boundaries.
Uses botanical key to identify plants encountered during field trips or surveys of Forest areas.
Assists in the collection, handling, and preservation of specimens. All biological data pertinent to collections and preservation are recorded.
Assists in maintenance of various collections used in connection with day-to-day research activities.
Observes and records expected responses in experiments and keeps aware of factors and situations included in experiments to ensure against error and to increase the reliability of the results obtained.

GS-04: (6) Six months of general experience and (6) six months of specialized experience equivalent to at least a GS-03 grade level.
General experience is defined as: performing farm/ranch labor, such as tending crops or general maintenance of plants and vegetation; working in a greenhouse, nursery or landscape business tending plants and performing general labor tasks; or other work experience, paid or unpaid, that demonstrates an ability to learn and perform the work of this position.
Specialized experience is defined as: participating in plant-related projects by assisting with measurements, recording observations, and assisting with the collection of biological and vegetation specimens. -OR
Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must be directly related to the position to be filled such as botany or related plant sciences. -OR
A combination of education and experience listed above.
