The Occupational Therapist practices independently as a member of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service (PM&RS) team at the Robert J. Dole VAMC in Wichita, Kansas. Primary function is direct patient care with duties and responsibilities carried out throughout the medical center including the full spectrum of acute care, sub-acute care, and out-patient clinics. The OT evaluates patients as assigned to address the needs of those who have, or are at risk of developing, a disease or disorder, activity limitation, or participation restriction that interferes with the patient's ability to function independently in their life roles: completes an examination by taking a patient history, conducting a systems review, and identifying/performing appropriate occupational therapy assessment and evaluation tools to address occupational, cognitive, and psychological functioning deficits; adapts the assessment tools as necessary to meet the complexity of the diagnosis and/or presence of co-morbidities; interprets the results of this examination and determines whether the problem(s) identified are within the scope of occupational therapist practice; designs a comprehensive treatment plan of care utilizing advanced occupational therapy techniques and interventions that reflect a knowledge of contemporary and evidenced-based occupational therapy practice; changes and modifies the treatment plans and approaches to accomplish the desired objectives. Identifies appropriate assistive devices, fabricating and modifying as necessary, and trains the patient/caregiver(s) in the proper use; establishes treatment goals and plans with the input of the patient, family/significant others/caregiver(s) and other healthcare professions to facilitate a multidisciplinary treatment approach; determines when the expertise and decision-making capability of the occupational therapist is required to personally render the assessment components and interventions or when it may be appropriate to utilize the skills of an occupational therapist assistant; effectively provides written and oral communication with multiple occupational therapist assistants, providing direction as indicated; performs reexamination of the patient in light of the anticipated goals and expected outcomes, and revises the plan of care when indicated; documents evaluation, goals, patient/family education, progress, discharge plan, and change in treatment or patient condition in medical records accurately; compiles daily, weekly, or monthly statistics for ongoing reporting. Effectively communicates orally to other staff members when immediate information is necessary; is capable of motivating a wide variety of patients to obtain effective participation in the occupational therapy program; works with high degree of independence and professional judgment in planning and carrying out treatment program; capitalizes on opportunities to intervene in or prevent changes in physical function and promote health, wellness, and fitness; appropriately identifies clinical signs and symptoms indicative of the need for referral for further medical attention/assessment; routinely consults with staff and resident physicians from all specialties.

Physical Requirements: Standing for periods of time, stretching, bending, positioning patients, lifting light loads with assistance in lifting/moving heavier objects. Able to read equipment/computer and operate a computer.

Grade Determinations:
Education and Experience. In addition to meeting the basic requirements, completion of one year of progressively complex experience and a broader scope of experience equivalent to the next lower grade directly related to the position being filled, or 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a degree in occupational therapy or a directly related field. Additionally, you must meet the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1. Knowledge of advanced occupational therapy techniques to perform functions associated within the occupational therapy scope of practice.
2. Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
3. Ability to adapt assessment tools and treatment to the complexity of the diagnosis or disabilities and demonstrate the clinical reasoning necessary to identify the need for further in depth specific assessment of function and utilization of non-standard methods and techniques.
4. Knowledge of principles and techniques in the occupational therapy assessment and treatment of occupational, cognitive, and psychological functional deficits.
5. Ability to interact with patients, families, and other health care providers.
6. Ability to facilitate and instruct in-service and clinical training programs.
7. Knowledge and ability to apply all health and safety regulations to minimize and mitigate risks in the provision of patient care and environmental maintenance.
