About the Position:
This position assists the Threatened and Endangered Species Section as a part of the Habitat Crew. This position will run from May 2018 through August 2018. Incumbent will need to be able to start in this position no later than June 1, 2018. This is a temporary position that will not lead to permanent employment.

Incumbent will serve as a Biological Science Technician for the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, working on the Missouri River in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska monitoring two Federally listed threatened/endangered shorebirds (piping plovers and least terns), and their habitat, during the bird's breeding season from May - August. Field work includes re-sighting of bands on adult least terns and piping plovers using video and still camera equipment as well as assessing habitat conditions on sandbars by measuring vegetation and substrate characteristics. Field work requires use of GPS equipment and operation of boats, office work includes preparing field gear and equipment, and the organization and entry of data collected in the field into electronic databases on a daily basis. Incumbent may also assist with the surveying and monitoring of least tern and piping plover productivity, and/providing protective measures for birds. Field work may require long hours walking through wetlands and across sandbars and walking or driving vehicles over rough terrain to conduct habitat and bird surveys. The incumbent spends considerable time outdoors, where the incumbent may encounter variable weather conditions and exposure to insects.
