    FULL TIME GENERAL SURGEON WANTED

    VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System is seeking a full-time General Surgeon to join a large and expanding Surgery Department. The practice involves all aspects of General Surgery (including open and laparoscopic surgery, both elective and emergency). Candidates must have strong academic aspirations with focus on clinical and/or basic research and teaching.

    The candidate will join the existing General Surgery team, participate in the call schedule, and split clinical time between the General Surgery clinic and the Operating Room.

    Responsibilities

    The position is located at the VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System (VASNHS), assigned to the Surgical Care Line reporting to the Chief of Surgery. The American Board of Surgery (ABS) states that general surgery is a discipline having a central core of knowledge embracing anatomy, physiology, metabolism, immunology, nutrition, pathology, wound healing, shock and resuscitation, and intensive care and neoplasia, which are common to all surgical specialties. Furthermore, the ABS holds that the general surgeon is an individual who has specialized knowledge and skills relating to the diagnosis, preoperative, operative, and postoperative management in the following areas: alimentary track; abdomen and its contents; breasts; skin and soft tissue; head and neck (including trauma, vascular, congenital and oncologic disorders - particularly tumors of the skin, salivary glands, thyroid, parathyroid, and the oral cavity); vascular system (excluding the intracranial vessels, the heart, and those vessels immediately adjacent thereto); endocrine system; surgical oncology (including coordinated multimodality management of the patient by screening, surveillance, surgical adjunctive therapy; rehabilitation, and follow-up). The responsibility for all phases of care of the injured patient is an essential component of general surgery; as well as complete care of critically ill patients with underlying surgical conditions in emergency departments and intensive care units.-Duties include, but are not limited to:
    -Leadership in the application of Evidence-Based Medicine to in-patient and outpatient client care, organizational processes and/or systems, improving outcomes at service level.
    -Knowledge to implement an educational plan to meet changing program or service needs for self and others.
    -Knowledge of current techniques, trends, and professional issues related to General Surgery care and performance measures related to General Surgery.
    -Knowledge of the range of administrative laws, policies, regulations, and precedents applicable to the administration of General Surgery care.
    -Knowledge of Quality Improvement tools in data collection and identifies barriers to the achievement of quality improvement in General Surgery care.
    -Knowledge relevant to the principles, practices and techniques associated with Performance Improvement, healthcare related issues, and other clinical professions.
    -Ability to retrieve, collect and analyze data in order to identify patterns and/or trends, and ways to modify and/or improve care practices in order to facilitate accomplishment of quality patient care.
    -Knowledge of the Computerized Patient Medical Record. Ability to analyze and evaluate the clinical contents of medical records and associated documents, in terms of the quality and appropriateness of clinical care issues, such as adherence to, or deviation from accepted referral/consultation guidelines, standards and/or procedures.
    -Thorough understanding of long-range objectives and the orderly and logical progression of steps to achieve those objectives.
    -Knowledge of current techniques, trends, and professional issues related to general surgery care.
    -May perform at a minimum 90% of his/her time in a clinical role 10% in administrative and educational role.
    -Expected to function as a cooperative and collegial team member with the entire general surgery division. This means that each individual surgeon should expect to take a proportional amount of call. Should be prepared to cover other attending's patients when "on call" as well as to be able to delegate responsibility to colleagues when "off call"
    -Participates in the development, implementation and maintenance of a systematic assessment of clinical, administrative and research practices in support of general surgery care.
    -Reviews medical charts of patients identified Peer Review; discuss cases/medical charts with physicians when needed/required.
    -Analyzes and evaluates the clinical contents of medical records and associated documents, in terms of the quality and appropriateness of clinical care issues, such as adherence to, or deviation from accepted referral/consultation guidelines, standards and/or procedures.
    -Makes determinations of medical necessity and documents approval or denial of referral/consultation requests for General Surgery care with supporting data and rationale in the electronic medical record.
    -Complete and sign all required documentation H&P, Operative reports, Discharge Summary, Encounters, and progress notes within the 24 hour requirement.
    -Knowledge of current techniques, trends and professional issues related to General Surgery care and performance measures related to General Surgery.
    -Thorough knowledge of the standards of care in surgery. Ability to perform all types of minor and major surgical interventions, both in the elective and emergency settings of General Surgery and Abdominal Surgery.
