Major Duties
Incumbent will manage a fire effects program consisting of a crew of 3-4 fire effects monitors. Provide direction and supervision for a Lead Fire Effects Monitor. Manage a portion of the fire budget that includes funding for the fire effects crew, monitoring activities, and special projects, and other fuels funded personnel. Review all fire related project plans as a member of an interdisciplinary team. Provide consistent and positive communication with the division Science and Resource Management, Interpretation, Public Affairs and the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Find, coordinate, and present opportunities for fire related research. Participate with wildfire planning and strategy meetings. Provide guidance and expertise to wildland fire management teams on "in-park" wildfires. Participate with the implementation and planning of wildland fire use fires, prescribed fires, and suppression fires.
Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.
AREA INFORMATION/HOUSING INFORMATION:
This position is stationed at the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park located in Northwest Arizona, approximately 60 miles north of Williams and 85 miles Northwest of Flagstaff at an elevation of 7,000 feet. Temperatures range from approximately 85 degrees in the summer to 17 degrees in the winter. Grand Canyon Village has schools K-12, a daycare center, post office, general store, banking facilities, churches, a recreation center, a clinic with resident physicians and several restaurants. The park community consists of some 2,000 people, including employees of the NPS and concessionaires and their family members. There are often employment opportunities for family members in the park and surrounding areas. The park community is small enough that many employees choose to walk or bike from their homes to work. Complete shopping, educational, medical and professional services are available in Williams and Flagstaff. Recreational opportunities include hiking, river rafting, fishing, cross-country and downhill skiing, and golfing in nearby communities.
Permanent employees obtain housing either through a bid system or by assignment into shared furnished quarters. Because of limited housing, when an employees is assigned shared quarters, the park is not able to provide accommodations for family member and pets. This position is stationed at Flagstaff, Arizona has a population of approximately 55,000 and is at an elevation of 7,000 feet. Flagstaff is located 80 miles from Grand Canyon National Park. Clear, sunny days with low relative humidity characterize Flagstaff's climate. Summers are warm with high temperatures in the 80's and frequent afternoon monsoon thunderstorms. Winters are cold with temperatures averaging in the 20's, and snow averaging around 80 inches. Flagstaff offers complete medical, dental and shopping services, along with excellent educational opportunities at Northern Arizona University and Coconino Community College. The country that surrounds Flagstaff is some of the most fascinating and beautiful in the southwest. A day on the road may take you from lush, green forests to the rugged, colorful desert. Several Indian Reservations, the San Francisco Peaks, Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona, several national monuments and parks including Grand Canyon National Park known throughout the world for its overwhelming size, intricate and colorful landscape, and as one of the most spectacular examples of arid land erosions in the world, are accessible from Flagstaff. Flagstaff Area National Monuments consists of Walnut Canyon NM, Sunset Crater Volcano NM and Wupatki NM. Wupatki NM is approximately 35 miles (60 minute drive) from Flagstaff, Arizona (a city with a population of around 65,000 and an elevation of 7,000 ft). Walnut Canyon is 8 miles east of Flagstaff, Sunset Crater Volcano is 8 miles north of Flagstaff and Wupatki is about 35 miles north of Flagstaff. Summers in Flagstaff are warm with temperatures in the 80's and frequent monsoon thunderstorms. Winters are cold, with low temperatures near zero and snow averaging around 90 inches. Flagstaff offers complete medical, dental and shopping services, along with excellent educational opportunities at Northern Arizona University and Coconino Community College. The surrounding desert, mountains and lakes provide varied recreational opportunities. Finding affordable housing/rentals in Flagstaff can be challenging and may be limited. There is no government housing available in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Physical Demands: Much of the work is performed in an office setting. Field work requires the ability to travel into the backcountry on foot involving exposure to a variety of climatic conditions and elevations ranging from 2000ft to 9000ft. The position may require strenuous physical activity including periods of standing, walking, climbing, and lifting, and carrying heavy objects.
Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep slopes, rocky terrain, fire lines, deserts, and forests. Flying in fixed wing aircraft and helicopters will likely occur.
The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
