General Description:
This represents the full performance level. Electromyography technicians at this level involves the performance of a variety of specialized diagnostic testing including Nerve Conduction Velocities (NCV), and Somatosensory Evoked Potentials (SSEP). The technician will also assist physician in electromyography examination. The work requires a highly skilled EMG technologist with expertise in a full range of electromyographic examination. The technician will possess a complete knowledge of various and complex Neuro-Diagnostic equipment including computerized Evoked Potential, Nerve Conduction Velocity and Electromyography instrumentation. The EMG technician shall have the knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the nervous system.
Duties:
The EMG technician independently performs Nerve Conduction Velocities (NCV) studies involving both the motor and sensory nerves of upper or lower extremities. The technician must use independent judgement in applying knowledge of neurophysiology and electromyography principle. The technician must use problem-solving skills to optimize the evaluation and adjust the examination to ensure that it is comprehensive and accurate, The EMG technician records and interprets the result of the examination and presents information and or possible diagnosis to interpreting physician. Failure to integrate such data may lead to inaccurate examination and erroneous interpretation. The technician receives patients, explains procedure and perform examination. Assists physician with interpretation of results. The technician calibrates, operates, troubleshoots, and maintains the EMG equipment.
Other duties include but are not limited to:
- Maintains logs and records
- Receives patients and explains the procedures
- Performs day to day cleaning and troubleshooting of the equipment and any other instrumentation allocated to the EMG clinic.
- Maintains patients logs upon completion of exam
- Independently performs Nerve Conduction Velocities (NCV) studies involving both the motor and sensory nerves or upper and lower extremities
- Performs both H-Reflex and F-Wave studies to determine diseases of cervical and lumbar regions
- Has knowledge of the implementation of NCV testing in unusual and complex situations

Basic Requirements:
- U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
- Knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the nervous system.
- Minimal one year experience in EMG/NCV procedure
- Certification is not required. Registered as an Electrodiagnostic Technician by the American Board of Registered Electrodiagnostic Technicians (ABRET) is preferred.

Education. There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Education may be substituted for experience only at the GS-4 and GS-5 levels. See the grade requirements part of this standard for information regarding educational substitutions

For certain functional areas at the higher levels or supervisory assignments, specific certifications appropriate to the specialty are indicated in this standard under "Titles and Certification/Registrations". For all specialties identified in this standard, Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications are desirable. Training which does not result in official certification does not meet this definition.
ABRET (American Board of Registered Electrodiagnostic Technicians strongly preferred.
