THIS IS A BARGAINING UNIT POSITION
TOUR OF DUTY: Primary schedules are 7:30 am - 4:00 pm, 11:30 am-8:00 pm, 3:30 pm - 12:00 am, and 11:30 pm - 8:00 am, to include 10 hours tours, 7:30 am -6:00 pm, 11:30 am 10:00 pm, and 1:30 pm-12:00 pm. May be required to work nights, weekends, holidays and off-tours to meet the needs of the veterans.
DUTIES: The Vascular Access Nurse provides assessment and care to acutely ill patients, requiring Peripheral Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) procedures. The Vascular Access Nurse demonstrates a broad perspective of clinical practice and its relationship to unit, service, and hospital goals and objectives. The Vascular Access demonstrates specialized knowledge of Peripheral Inserted Central Catheter (PICC), Midline Catheter, Ultrasound Guided PIV, and PIV Insertion based on nationally recognized scientific standards, and provides consultation and instruction to staff, physicians, and patients regarding Vascular Access Placements. Proficient in Vein cannulation using Ultrasound Sonography and/or best practice techniques as identified by the facility. The Vascular Access Nurse independently uses sound judgment in making decisions regarding responsibilities and provides leadership to interdisciplinary groups at all levels. Excellent interpersonal skills are essential as the Vascular Access Nurse requires minimal guidance except in unusual situations. Responsible for obtaining consent for the Peripheral Inserted Central Catheters (PICC). Responds to all consultations for PICC, Midline and other Vascular Access Device placement, screens those patients for appropriateness/need for a Vascular Access or recommends alternative IV access. Inserts PICCs after completing training and PICC insertion competency. Provides education and problem solving strategies for the staff related to IV therapy Peripheral Intravenous (PIV) lines and Peripheral Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) insertion. Tracks and trends issues related to vascular access care delivery, leads and participates in performance improvement activities such as, but not limited to, monitoring of catheter related blood stream infection rates, utilization review, and central line bundle compliance and infection rates. Maintains and generates quarterly reports. Vascular Access Nurse may provide direct patient care in Critical Care/Intensive Care Unit as required by Veteran needs. Competency is demonstrated in performing clinical skills commensurate with assignment as documented on both the Vascular Access Nurse competency assessment and Critical Care/Intensive Care Unit Nurse competency assessment. The duties of the ICU Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The RN will effectively demonstrate successful nursing practice characterized by using sound clinical judgment, and characteristics of critical care nursing practice in assessment/reassessment, analysis, nursing diagnosis, planning of interventions, outcome identification, and evaluation of human responses of individuals to care/treatment; triage and prioritization; stabilization and resuscitation; Incumbent directs the delivery of nursing care and leadership provided through assignment, delegation and supervision of ancillary staff and through committee participation, patient care and discharge instructional teaching activities, and demonstrated ability to function as a preceptor to other nurses. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, and able to shift priorities based on patient needs. The incumbent must be poised and articulate in communicating with people of varied educational levels and varied ethnic backgrounds. Willing to work cooperatively as a member of a team in all assignments. Makes caring for the Veteran his/her priority while in the work setting and demonstrates customer service principles in all aspects of work. Self-motivated in the pursuit of meeting professional work standards. The incumbent is directly responsible to the Nurse Manger.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Vascular Access Board Certification and recent ICU experience
