- Fitting patients with braces and prostheses (artificial limbs)
- Fitting patients having deformed or malfunctioning feet with orthopedic shoes

QualificationsExperience And Education/Training Requirements
Qualifying experience and training may have been acquired in automotive, electronic, furniture, garment, or woodworking shops or factories, in a hospital or clinical setting, or in the Armed Forces as a medic or mechanic. All applicants must have the ability to: Deal with patients' orthotic or prosthetic needs while recognizing their emotional and mental outlook and attitudes; Accept responsibility as participating members of the health care team, be aware of the ethical considerations present and the need to adhere to medical ethical practices in all their relationships; and Work with professionals and nonprofessionals, and recognize the contribution of each in attaining the objectives of the treatment plan prescribed by a physician or developed by a clinical team.
GS-9: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-08 level in the Federal service or equivalent, which has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skill, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience involves measuring and fitting patients with all types of custom made orthotic or prosthetic appliances for the more common disability levels; working with metals, leather, plastics, fabrics, and other materials; reading and understanding prescriptions; use of tools and equipment; measuring, fabricating, and fitting patients with braces for the trunk and cervical spine, leg braces and leg-thigh braces; and developing forms, lasts, and patterns for the less difficult foot-ankle disabilities.
GS-10: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service or equivalent, which has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skill, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience involves developing devices for patients with disabilities at the more difficult levels or with combination disabilities; designing and fitting a wide variety of types of orthotic devices require gradual orthotic rehabilitation (spastic paraplegic, or hemiplegic patients, and patients seriously disabled with rheumatoid arthritis); and designing and fitting a wide variety of types of prostheses to the upper and lower extremities which involves fitting temporary prostheses to patients as an immediate post-operative procedure following an amputation where in such cases must be present during surgery.
GS-11: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-10 level in the Federal service, which has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skill, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience involves applying orthotic devices to any disability including complex and serious disabilities using a high level of technical skill in measuring, fabricating and fitting the device; working from prescriptions; analyzing problems and developing or adapting new or improved methods, techniques, instruments and devices; modifying shoes by adding leather, cork, plastic and other types of inserts; and fabricating or making pylons and other appliances to assist patients to perform ordinary tasks.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
