The Medical Instrument Technician works within the Neurology Section under the Medical Service Care Line. The Medical Instrument Technician is supervised by the Director of the Sleep Lab. The sleep lab technician monitors equipment used in sleep studies, such as an electroencephalogram (EEG), which records brain activity as a person sleeps.The technician works under the supervision of the Supervisory Medical Instrument Technician who in turn is supervised by the Medical Director of the Sleep Lab.
Duties:
(1) Gather and analyze the Veterans information for review in order to identify and meet the patient specific needs (physical/mental limitations, current emotional/physiological status regarding the testing procedure, pertinent medical/social history) to determine testing parameter/procedures per Physician order and Sleep Laboratory protocol (within 20 minutes for both patients).
(2) Incumbent prepare and calibrate equipment required for testing to determine proper functioning and make adjustments if necessary. Applies electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards within one hour for each patient. Perform positive airway pressure masks fitting with considerations of each patients' special health issue. Perform appropriate physiologic calibrations to ensue proper signals and make adjustments if necessary at the onset of each Sleep Study recording. Incumbent score sleep/awake stages by applying professional accepted guidelines score clinical events (such as respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements and respiratory arousal, etc.) according to Sleep Laboratory Medical Center Director and professional accepted guidelines.
(3) Incumbent works with a variety of brands and types of PAP (CPAP, BiPAP, ASV, AVAPS and others) and mask fitting to assure optimal mask seal and comfort. Educates patient on safe and proper use of PAP machine, mask, and associated equipment to assure optimal function and sleep quality. Ensures patient's significant other or caregiver fully understands setup procedures and functions of BiPAP/CPAP unit.
(4) Incumbent follows procedural protocols for NPSG, Split, Parasomnia, CPAC/Bi-Level Oxygen titration and to ensure collection of appropriate data under the Supervision of the Sleep Lab Medical Director. Performs polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free and make adjustment, is necessary.
Work Schedule: 7:30 p.m. - 7:30 a.m., three (3) days a week, with a (8) hour shift schedule per service needs to meet the requirements of 80 hours per pay period.

Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and moderate physical exertion including but not limited to walking, frequent bending, reaching, and stretching to set up and take apart medical equipment; lifting and positioning patients; and carrying, pushing or pulling moderately heavy objects.
Basic Requirements:
· U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
· English Language Proficiency. Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part.
Preferred Experience: . Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable.

Grade Determinations:
GS-8, One year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-7) which demonstrates the knowledge, skills , abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. This would be experience which provided a knowledge of the more complex procedures as well as knowledge of the uncommon and/or rare sleep disorders. The addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
(1) Advanced knowledge or the International Classification of Sleep Disorders and the ability to recognize uncommon and/or rare sleep disorders.
(2) Ability to summarize and report polysomnographic data in narrative form.
(3) Knowledge of event characteristics (e.g., respiratory, cardiac, sleep stage, seizures, etc.) and ability to take appropriate action.
(4) Ability to provide briefings and orientation to hospital staff including physicians.
