The incumbent serves as the Medical Support Assistant (MSA) aligned in the Patient Business Service at the Chalmers P. Wylie Veterans Ambulatory Care Center. The Medical Support Assistant (MSA) position serves as Contact Center Medical Support Assistant. Members of the Contact Center include the Medical Support Assistants and Registered Nurses under telephone nurse triage. The call center works collaboratively with PACT as well as Specialty and surgical care, pharmacists, social workers, dieticians, behavioral health staff, etc. to provide a robust interdisciplinary approach to care. Important interfaces and collaborations also occur with larger health care system providers including VA and non-VA specialists, hospitals, diagnostic and treating facilities, and community based programs. Medical Support Assistants at this grade are responsible for a range of duties that typify the full-performance level, and which include responsibility for interpreting and verifying provider orders in accordance with VHA National Scheduling Directive guidelines. At this level the MSA typically schedules, cancels, and re-schedules patients' appointments and/or consults; enters no-show information; monitors the electronic wait list; prepares for clinic visits monitors both inpatient and outpatient appointments for areas of appropriate workload credit; verifies and updates demographics and insurance information; processes all emergency and non-emergency transfers to other VA facilities or to private hospitals; and performs/facilitates basic eligibility, copay and preauthorization requirements for specific coverage (such as TRICARE, sharing agreements, etc.).
Work Schedule: Monday-Sunday, 8-10 hour shifts, Days and Hours vary and are subject to change based off of the needs of the Columbus VA Ambulatory Care Center.

Physical Requirements:The work is basically sedentary. Other physical demands include reaching, bending, stretching, and carrying light loads of supplies.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g.)
Experience and Education
(a) Experience. Six months experience of clerical, office or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position; or
(b) Education. One year above high school; or
(c) Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
English Language Proficiency. MSAs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j.
Certification: None required.
Preferred Experience:Knowledge of Current Medical Support Assistant Practices.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Grade Determinations:
GS-5 MSA (Full Performance Level)
Experience or Education: One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level or 4 years of education above high school.
Assignment: This is the full performance level for MSAs. At this level, the MSA performs a full range of duties.
Assignments at this level include, but are not limited to: scheduling, canceling, rescheduling patient's appointments and/or consults; entering no-show information; monitoring the electronic wait list; preparing for clinic visits; monitoring both inpatient and outpatient appointments for areas of responsibility; ensuring counter forms are completed in order to obtain appropriate workload credit; verifying and updating demographics and insurance information; processing all emergency and non-emergency transfers to other VA facilities or private hospitals; performing basic eligibility, co-pays and pre-authorization requirements for specific coverage (i.e., Tricare, sharing agreements, etc.).
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities - Candidates must demonstrate the KSAs below:
1. Ability to operate computerized programs and databases in order to enter, modify and retrieve sensitive information/data into or from electronic medical records, scheduling systems and/or reports.
2. Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
3. Ability to make appointments in a clinical setting.
4. Ability to work independently in the accomplishment of a wide variety of duties, including setting priorities and coordinating work.
5. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels.
6. Ability to identify customer's concerns, perform the tasks required to resolve the issue accurately and timely, and follow-up as necessary to ensure a satisfactory resolution.
