The selectee duties include serving as Supervisory Veterinary Medical Research Microbiologist and is the Research Leader (RL) of the Endemic Poultry Viral Diseases Research Unit (EPVD) and Avian Disease and Oncology Laboratory (ADOL) of the USDA-ARS-U.S. National Poultry Research Center, Southeast Poultry Research Laboratory in Athens, Georgia. The incumbent is responsible for the scientific leadership and line authority over scientists and support personnel assigned to the unit and reports to the Laboratory Director (Level III). In this capacity, the incumbent maintains and enhances creativity and productivity of the unit; hires personnel and manages the human, fiscal, and physical resources assigned to the unit; serves as the unit fund holder; provides technical information and consultation, both internal and external to ARS; and ensures the proper interpretation and reporting of scientific results and information. The incumbent's research into viral enteric disease syndromes focuses on detecting, identifying and characterizing novel viruses in the poultry gut. The incumbent's role will be to identify and characterize novel poultry enteric viruses in poultry enteric diesease and production losses and develop vaccine platforms, control strategies and companion molecular diagnostic tests for the poultry enteric viruses.
Medical Requirements:
Individuals must be physically and mentally able to safely and efficiently perform the full range of duties of the position without creating hazards to themselves or others.
Veterinary Medical Officers who inspect or supervise inspection activities in privately owned slaughter houses and processing plants must meet specific medical standards and physical requirements established by the Food Safety and Inspection Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
