This is a Career-Seasonal position and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment, but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. The incumbent serves in a key fire management position as a Supervisory Forestry Technician on a helitack crew.
- Serves as a supervisory wildland firefighter on a helitack crew.
- Supervises the fire suppression efforts of the helicopter module.
- Directs the loading of helicopter personnel and cargo considering weight and balance, securing cargo, etc.
- Completes manifests of personnel and equipment being transported to the fire or other work sites.
- Inventories and inspects helicopter accessories, fire tools, and equipment.
- Assures that needed tools and equipment are available for fire fighting tasks.
- Serves as a helispot and dipsite manager on incidents requiring the establishment of these sites.
- Certified in the use of long line external loads and the operation and maintenance of accessory equipment.
- Prepares and maintains required documents (e.g., flight invoices, manifests, daily diaries, and load calculations.
- Implements formal and informal training programs to comply with policy and regulations.
- Participates in crew proficiency checks and drills, safety sessions, and fire critiques.
- Operates a variety of motor vehicles to transport equipment, supplies, crew members, etc.
- Evaluates fire situations based on fire behavior, weather, topography, fuel types and potential hazards.
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
Selected applicants must pass a pre-employment medical examination following the Department of the Interior Medical Standards Program for arduous duty Wildland Firefighters (WLFF). The agency pays for this examination.
