This position is in NASA Pathways Intern Program provides students with the opportunity to explore NASA careers and gain meaningful developmental work experience.
This Pathways Intern position is for an industrial hygiene student trainee in the Occupational Health Branch in the Safety & Health Division of the Safety and Mission Assurance Directorate. The Branch provides health services and programs which are protective of worker and visitor health in all GRC working environments, and promotes wellness. The Branch assures compliance to NASA HQ Office of Chief Health and Medical Officer (OCHMO) requirements, Federal (OSHA, NRC), state, local, and Center Occupational health program and policy requirements. OH provides technical expertise to center staff, the institution, operations and center programs through health hazard anticipation, recognition, management, assessment, control for the prevention of exposures to biological, chemical, radiological and physical hazards. Occupational health provides health based training, supports HQ Occupational health audits and assessments, provides OH support to agency working groups and their Occupational health organizations.

The Industrial Hygiene (IH) intern will support physical and chemical hazard assessments, safety permit reviews, ventilation surveys, IH building inspections and develop and generate reports in the Electronic Environmental Health Records (EHRS) system. Tasks will include sampling and surveys, onsite equipment field calibration, and support for the development of standard operating procedures.
• You must be available to work at least 640 hours prior to completion of degree.
• You will be required to sign a Pathways Participant Agreement.
• You must have at least one calendar year remaining before completing degree requirements by the start date of your appointment.
• This appointment will start no earlier than May 2018. Applicants who indicate a graduation date prior to May 2019 will be found ineligible.
To be eligible for this position, you must be pursuing a graduate degree or higher in Industrial Hygiene, Environmental and Occupational Health, Occupational and Environmental Hygiene, or Environmental Health Sciences at an accredited educational institution.
You must meet eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

You will serve a trial period for the duration of the Intern appointment.
Interns may work schedules not to exceed 1,040 hours per year (part-time or full-time on an intermittent basis). The supervisor and Intern will agree on a formally-arranged schedule of school and work rotations. A rotation is a defined period of work or school study, usually a semester, a summer, or a quarter in length.
This vacancy announcement may be used to fill additional positions within 90 days of the closing date of the announcement.
The Intern may be converted to an Industrial Hygienist Position with a full performance level to the GS-13.
Interns may be considered for conversion to a term or permanent appointment within 120 days of completion of degree requirements provided they:
• Successfully completed an academic course of study with a GPA of at least 2.9 (on a 4.0 scale);
• Complete a minimum of 640 hours of work experience before completing degree requirements;
• Meet the qualification requirements for the position to which they are converted; and
• Maintain acceptable performance.
Eligibility for conversion does not guarantee that NASA will offer conversion. At NASA, term appointments last from one to six years. If an Intern is converted to a term appointment, they may later be converted to a permanent appointment without competing.
