About the Position:
This position is for the supervisor for the Clinical Microscopy (Hematology) section of the Core Laboratory, Department of Pathology, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, located in Bethesda, MD.
The work requires long periods of standing, moving, sitting, and intense concentration, often in noisy and congested areas. Occasional lifting of up to 40 pounds may be required. The work involves regular and recurrent exposure to hazards, such as infectious diseases, and you will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE).

As a Supervisory Medical Technologist, you will serve as both the administrative/general and technical supervisor for the Clinical Microscopy (Hematology) section of the Core Laboratory. Oversee and/or perform high-complexity testing in clinical microscopy to include, but not limited to, hematology, differentials, coagulation, urinalysis, bone marrows, body fluids, semen analysis, and flow cytometry, as covered by Standing Operating Procedures (SOPs), and ultimately originate policy guidance and develop SOPs for new laboratory tests. Oversee, plan, implement, and support Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement; assuring compliance with quality control and proficiency testing programs, safety requirements, and standards set by department, accrediting and regulatory agencies. Validate the adequacy and appropriateness of quality control programs and the completion of corrective actions and documentation for all identified problems. Review Section Performance Evaluation and Improvement reports, identify trends, and provide analytical assistance in recommending policy changes based on review findings. Serve as the section expert on clinical microscopy testing and patient safety, and train and consult with personnel, including, but not limited to, leadership staff, department chiefs, physicians, and other medical center staff. Plan, manage, and monitor the activities and resources in the clinical microscopy laboratory and resolve daily problems in a timely manner to ensure uninterrupted quality service to customers and patients. Direct and supervise your staff and programs, working from a broad set of goals and policies, to ensure laboratory accreditation by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) in support of the Core Laboratory and the Department of Pathology.
