This position is located at the Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge located in Middle River, MN. In this position you would serve as a Maintenance Mechanic with primary responsibility for maintaining the facilities and associated grounds and structures at the Refuge, as well as the heavy equipment and other Refuge vehicles.

Following are the major, though not all inclusive, duties of the position:
* Performs non-supervisory maintenance and repair work of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, and related fixtures and utilities.
* Performs plumbing work involved in the installation, modification, and repair of utility, supply and disposal system, and equipment such as the sewage system, oil and gas distribution systems and water closets, tubs, and showers.
* Constructs, repairs, or modifies building structures and related facilities such as finished paneling, doors, windows, and rafters.
* Performs electrical repairs involving replacing, tightening, spicing, soldering and insulating defective wiring controls, equipment and fixtures, and hooking up electrical items including outlets, switches, light fixtures, regulators, and circuit breakers.
* Operates a variety of gasoline and diesel powered heavy engineering and construction equipment with wheeled or crawler-type traction and attachments. Equipment is used for such activities as road and dike repair, weed control, farming and loading/unloading materials and equipment.
* Performs routine maintenance and repair work on refuge heavy equipment consisting of dozers, tractors, grader and excavator.
* Applies a variety of electric, gas, or other manual welding processes or methods to carry out standard welding operations such as repairing, modification, fabrication, or rebuilding of various metal, alloy and equipment parts.
* Participates in habitat management by assisting with controlled burning.
* Participates in wild land fire fighting.
Requires a considerate amount of standing, stooping, bending, climbing, and working in tiring of uncomfortable positions. When operating heavy equipment, the worker is under a great of strain by constantly reaching, bending, turning, and moving of hands, arms, feet, and legs, and by the vibration and jerking of equipment.
Lifting up to 50 pounds may also be required.
THIS IS A DRUG TESTING DESIGNATED POSITION. Applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required prior to appointment to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use. As a condition of continued employment in this position, incumbent(s) will be subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
Incumbent is subject to a pre-employment medical examination and must pass the work capacity test for fire duties.
The selectee will be required to have or obtain a commercial driver's license, which requires pre-employment and random drug & alcohol testing.

To be considered for this position you must demonstrate that you can perform the work of a Maintenance Mechanic at the WG-09 level under normal supervision. You must have performed your highest level of work in at least two of the following trades: motor vehicle/heavy equipment maintenance, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, welding, and heavy equipment operation.
Although a specific length of time and experience is not required you must show, through experience and/or training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skills necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
