OVERVIEW
This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol (AOC), Library Buildings and Grounds (LBG) jurisdiction. The LBG is responsible for the day-to-day structural, mechanical and grounds care of the Library of Congress buildings located on Capitol Hill.
The incumbent performs Electrical Worker duties to support journeyman electricians. A higher graded worker or supervisor plans, lays out and assigns work orally and/or through work orders. The electrical worker selects tools, decides on methods and techniques to use and performs the work assigned.

Major duties and responsibilities include the following:
Under the direction of journeyman electricians, the incumbent will assist in performing inspections; installing, repairing, maintaining, troubleshooting, re-lamping, and replacing lighting fixtures with voltages from 120 to 480. Selects proper bulb type and ballasts from stock for replacement.
Assists journeyman electricians with assembling, installing, testing, and maintaining electrical wiring, equipment, appliances, apparatus, and fixtures. Strings wire through conduit pipes and drilling holes. Gradually progresses to more complex tasks and learns to diagnose and solve wiring problems.
Follows directions to perform inspection, installation, repair, maintenance, troubleshooting, and replacement of electrical systems which includes lighting systems, power distribution systems (electrical panels), emergency systems (including exit lights and security lights), ballasts, switches, electrical receptacles, conduits, and cables involving voltages from 120 volts to 480 volts.
Under guidance and direction of a higher-level electrician, tests electrical systems for continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures, using testing devices such as ohmmeters, amp meters, and voltmeters to ensure compatibility and safety.
Receives training and guidance to repair or install equipment such as motors and circuit breakers.
Connects wires to circuit breakers, transformers, motors, or other components. Installs wall switches and electrical outlets. Replaces light ballasts and installs lighting fixtures.
Assists in diagnosing malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and components to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem. Utilizes preventative measures such as oiling motors, bending conduit, and replacing old wiring.
Inspects electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustments and repairs. Ensures compliance with electrical code.
