Physical Demands: Arduous: Duties involve rigorous fieldwork requiring above average physical performance, endurance and superior conditioning. Work requires prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, and recurring bending, reaching, lifting and carrying of items weighing over 50 pounds and shared lifting and carrying of heavier items, and similar strenuous activities requiring at least average agility and dexterity. Duties include demands for strenuous activities in emergencies under adverse environmental conditions and over extended periods of time. Operation of some specialized fire equipment can place extended physical stress on incumbent during fire activities. Incumbent is subject to medical examination and must pass the work capacity test for arduous positions.
Work Environment: The work is primarily performed in forest and desert environments in steep terrain where surfaces may be extremely uneven, rocky, covered with thick tangled vegetation, smoky conditions, etc. Temperatures commonly exceed 100 degrees fahrenheit and fall below freezing. Risks include smoke inhalation, fire entrapment, snake or insect bites and stings, exposure to excessive machinery noise, and falling and rolling material. Personnel must adjust and cope with exposure to weather elements, dust and smoke, poor bivouac and eating situations under an unpredictable set of circumstances. Incumbent may be required to live in backcountry camps for extended periods of time. The hazardous nature of the work requires that personal protective equipment be worn (boots, hardhat, gloves, flame resistant clothing, etc.). Work may require travel by light fixed-wing or rotor-wing aircraft.

Serves as a senior wildland firefighter on a wildland fire engine, performing wildland firefighting work, i.e., wildland fire suppression and control activities including suppression, preparedness, prevention, monitoring, hazardous fuel reduction, and prescribed burning. Drives engine to fire locations, frequently over unimproved roads. Positions engine in appropriate locations in consideration of safety of crew and equipment and how the equipment can best be used in control and mop-up operations. Personally performs and may direct others in starting pump engine, priming pump, adjusting engine speed and pump valves, laying hose, and using appropriate nozzles and nozzle adjustment in effective use of water and additives. Has specialized duties such as water handling specialist, fully qualified chain saw operator, or responsible for maintenance of specialized equipment used to respond to wildland urban interface/intermix situations. Participates in wildland fire and safety training. Responsible for water handling, operating a chain saw and maintenance of specialized equipment.

Specialized Experience Requirements:
Seasonal experience may also be creditable. A season of experience is considered to be a period of no less than 3 months of continuous employment on a seasonal basis. Shorter periods may be combined to make a season, provided a total of at least 3 months' experience is shown. For any period where the work exceeded 3 months, the excess work is credited towards an additional season of experience. Four (4) seasons of experience qualify for GS-4.
Examples of qualifying specialized experience include:
To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade GS-03 for the GS-04 and GS-04 for the GS-05 of the position to be filled. Examples:
To qualify for a GS-04: You must have six (6) months of general and six (6) months of specialized experience along with 90 days of wildland fire experience. Wildland fire experience is defined as any non-structure fire that occurs in the wildland. Wildland firefighting experience is gained through work on the fire line in containment, control, suppression or use of wildland fire. This experience can be met by serving in a temporary, seasonal or equivalent private sector fire position. Periods of wildland firefighting experience gained through militia and rural fire departments can also be credited.
To qualify for GS-05: You must meet at least one of the following AND the Selective Factor: - 12 months of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-4 level duties. Examples include on-the-line wildland fire experience in forest/range fire control, prevention or suppression work as a skilled wildland firefighter, utilizing a variety of specialized wildland fire tools and equipment. The incumbent will be required to obtain and maintain a commercial drivers license (CDL) with a tank endorsement.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
FIRE Selective Factors
(IFPM) This position is subject to the Interagency Fire Program (IFPM) Standard and Guide selective placement factors for a senior wildland firefighter. This position requires the following qualifications – Currency is not required.
For the GS- 05: In addition to the basic qualifications listed above, you must have the following for the GS-05: You must possess the following National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) incident management qualification and training to be considered eligible for the GS-5 position:
Incident Qualification and Certification System (IQCS) Master Record or other equivalent documentation which verifies you meet the required NWCG qualifications for this IFPM position. Failure to provide this documentation by the closing dated of the announcement will result in you being rated as not qualified.
Education maybe substituted and/or combined with specialized experience to meet the specialized experience requirement.
Educational Requirement:
For GS-4: Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 3 semester hours in mathematics is credit-able.
For GS-5: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as those shown above For GS-4. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable.
