As Lead Archeologist in of the park's Division of Science and Resource Management, the incumbent serves as the Chief of Science and Resource Management's principal advisor on all matters relating to the management and preservation of cultural, and serves as a member on the park's leadership team. The position has a strong functional relationship with all other park operating programs. Primary duties and responsibilities of this position include overall management, direction, supervision, fiscal management, implementation, and quality assurance of all cultural resource programs, and for the distribution of information on these programs to park management staff and others. Duties also include oversight of external partnering on cultural resource issues including working with the Arizona and Utah State Historic Preservation Offices and 6 or more Tribal Historic Preservation Offices, parkwide strategic planning efforts, and NEPA/NHPA compliance.
Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.
Area Information: Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, in Page, Arizona is located on the Arizona-Utah border, 135 miles north of Flagstaff, Arizona, the nearest larger community. Page looks out on beautiful Lake Powell which offers boating, associated water sports recreation and fishing. The surrounding land of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area offers beautiful red rock country for hiking and backcountry recreational activity. Page is centrally located to many other National Parks, such as the Grand Canyon, Zion, Arches and AreaARECanyonlands to name a few. Page offers normal community amenities such as shopping, medical and dental facilities, schools K-12 and college courses available through local Coconino Community College. The area enjoys typical high desert climate with temperatures ranging from 100+ in summer to mid-teens in winter with low humidity and sunshine most days of the year. Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Assignments may be performed in both potentially hazardous areas including steep slopes, rocky terrain, volcanoes, caves, firelines, arctic environments, swamps, deserts and forests. Flying in fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters is possible.
The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
