Conditions of Employment
Background or Security Investigation: This is a Non-Critical Sensitive position which requires a background investigation. The individual selected for this position is required to obtain and maintain a Secret security determination to occupy a Non-Critical Sensitive position within the agency as a condition of employment.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must:
Have substantive knowledge of the principal aspects/issues of national security strategy to include knowledge of U.S. national security strategy, foreign policy, defense policy or international affairs, as demonstrated through the candidate's teaching experience, publication record, professional experience, or active participation in the intellectual life of their field.
Have evidence of excellence in teaching as a full-time faculty member at an accredited college or university.
Desired Qualifications:
- Willingness and capacity to eventually serve in a range of college leadership roles, including department chair, associate dean and director of a college project area.
- Willingness and capacity to conceive of, develop, and run one of the collaborative courses that make up the National War College core curriculum, as demonstrated through past experience developing and running courses, collaborative projects, or related endeavors that required a high level of conceptual knowledge, organizational capacity and leadership.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills, and can provide valuable training and experience that translates to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
Applicants for the position at the Assistant Professor level must possess an earned master's degree (a doctorate or other terminal degree preferred) from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with an academic specialty in an appropriate discipline as related to national security strategy with at least two years of professional teaching experience at the undergraduate or graduate level.
Applicants for the position at the Associate Professor level must possess an earned doctorate or
equivalent terminal degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education (or international equivalent) in an appropriate discipline as related to national security strategy, as well as at least five years of full time teaching experience. A minimum of two years must be at the graduate level.
Applicants for the position at the Professor level must possess an earned doctorate or equivalent terminal degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education (or international equivalent) in an appropriate discipline as related to national security strategy, as well as at least eight years of full time teaching experience. A minimum of three years must be at the graduate level.

A screening panel will review your resume and narrative answers to the assessment questions to evaluate your qualifications for the position. NDU uses a multi-tier selection process for academic positions. The following questions will be reviewed by the NDU screening panel:
- Describe the nature, extent, and currency of your expertise in: the regional security affairs of Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, or the Middle East; or in a functional subject area integral to national security strategy such as international negotiations, military theory, applied economics, or information operations; or both.
- Describe your teaching experience as a full-time faculty member at an accredited college or university. Please provide the level of the course (undergraduate or graduate), the number of years each position was held and the courses taught, and provide copies of teaching evaluations for said courses.
- Describe your experience designing, directing, and/or teaching collaboratively developed, interdisciplinary courses. Provide the title of each course and describe your level of involvement designing, directing, and/or teaching the course as well as the amount of credit hours assigned with the course.
- Leadership - Describe your experience in serving in a college or university leadership position, including the number of years you held each position as well as primary duties and responsibilities in each position. Collegiate/University leadership positions include Dean of Faculty, Associate Dean, Assistant Dean, Department Chair, or Director of a significant college project/program.
- Describe your record of scholarship in fields directly related to national security strategy, with scholarship defined as engagement in the discovery, creation, integration, application, sharing, and dissemination of knowledge. Please specify instances of scholarship such as books or articles in academic journals, publishing think-tank reports, drafting government documents as part of one's professional duties, or presenting research at academic conferences or professional meetings and provide electronic (PDF) examples of any recent, written work.
