About the Position:
Serves as Master of a non-self propelled crane or derrickbarge displacing from 175 to 1100 tons engaged in maintenance of waterways. Responsible for the maintenance, seaworthiness and safety of the vessel and all persons on board.

Supervises the operation of a crane or derrickbarge engaged in channel maintenance and hoisting services.
Directs and assigns crew in work to be performed such as wrecking, hoisting, removing channel obstructions, submarine drilling and blasting, repairing breakwaters, setting stone on breakwaters, construction and repair of docks and pile driving.
Directs the placement of the derrickboat in position, the placement of anchors and
fastening of lines, the operation of deck winches and the anchoring of the boat.
Locates area; makes necessary arrangements for accomplishing
Prepares daily time sheet shoving the crew s hours worked, area excavated in square feet, area swept in square feet, yardage dug each day and yardage unloaded each day, types of materials, weather conditions, gauge readings, etc.
When required, operates steam, diesel or diesel electric powered hoisting and swinging engines on vessel engaged in removing obstructions and shoals in navigation channels.
When removing ledge rock, boulders and wreckage from navigation channels, deposits material removed on the deck of the vessel or in the pockets of the dump scow.
During the winter months, supervises all repairs to house, hull, machinery and equipment.
Conducts safety meetings and life saving drills for the adequate protection of all personnel on board.
Properly maintains marine safety equipment, e.g. fire protection, life saving and first-aid equipment , and instructs crew members in their use.
