The duties are in the performance of law enforcement work to preserve the peace; the prevention, detection, and investigation of crimes occurring on Department of Veterans Affairs controlled property. Duties include, the arrest of violators; the control of traffic; the provision of assistance for citizens in emergency situations, including the protection of personnel, civil rights, and VA owned or controlled property. The VA police officer assures compliance with federal, state, county, and municipal laws and ordinances as they pertain to VA property and agency rules and regulations pertaining to law enforcement work. Other duties of a VA Police Officer at these Medical Centers are to:
- Reduce opportunities for crime and misconduct;
- Conduct aggressive protective patrols for the security of patients, staff, and property;
- Assist those who cannot care for themselves due to health or condition;
- Extend information, direction, and courtesy to visitors, employees, and patients;
- Identify and report hazardous situations and correct immediate dangers;
- Take life-saving actions in all emergency and disaster situations;
- Identify criminal activity and, where appropriate, apprehend violators;
- Cite or arrest violators of regulations and laws when necessary;
- Conducts short and long-term investigations.

Position Description Title/PD#: Police Officer/16035A
Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking, driving, bending, stooping, reaching, crawling, and similar activities. Employees engage in such exertions when responding to alarms, pursuing suspects, or participating in weapons or other kinds of training activities,climbing stairs in office buildings, or walking foot patrols in and around large buildings. In some positions, the work may regularly involve lifting and carrying of heavy objects of 23 kilograms(50 pounds) or less, such as weapons. Considerable and strenuous physical execution, agility strength,and dexterity may also be required to pursue apprehend and detain uncooperative suspects.
Time-in-grade: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05 level.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience includes, but is not limited to pursuing and apprehending persons fleeing from a crime scene, clarifying conflicting statements, and coordinating with other law enforcement agencies to gather facts or evidence for use in assigned cases.

Competency 4- Knowledge of established rules, regulations and legal authorities to perform duties and responsibilities within prescribed limitations of the use of detention authority, search and seizure and the use of force.
Competency 5- Knowledge of a body of standardized rules, methods, procedures , and operating techniques that requires considerable training and experience, to perform a full range of operations in preventing or resolving offenses, or in conducting proficient investigations of incidents ranging from simple rules violations to felony and capital crimes.
