· The nursing assistant serves as a member of the nursing team, participates in the care of patients in acute, sub-acute or chronic stage of illness with changing nursing needs that are predictable and require periodical assessment by the registered nurse. The incumbent performs aspects of nursing care that requires; (1) a basic understanding to the total patient program; (2) understanding of simple scientific facts and principles: (3) a broad spectrum of technical skills; (4) adaption of procedures to meet individual patient needs, and (5) recognition of the relatedness of patients' behavior and physical condition.
· He/she must be knowledgeable in setting up patient care related equipment such as oxygen, suction and assisting in monitoring proper functioning equipment. Maintain knowledge of safe patient handling and movement, to prevent injury to self and Veterans. The nursing assistant attends annual training to maintain skills. He/she participates in nursing team conferences and treatment team conferences as assigned.
· Provides a range of patient care and contributes to the completion of the nursing care plan and the recovery of patients. Displaying respect for human dignity and the uniqueness of the patient unrestricted by consideration of social or economic status, personal attributes or nature of health problems.
· He/she must have knowledge of human body structure, function and health problem and skills sufficient to communicate with patient/family, nursing staff and members of the multi-disciplinary team. He/she must have knowledge and skills sufficient to observe the patients physical and emotional reactions to care and treatment for the purpose of communicating the nursing and medical staff and making notations in the patients' record.
· He/she reads nursing care plan and follows instructions on a care plan so consistent care is given. The incumbent communicates questions or recommendations regarding patient care with primary nurse or team leader. Recognizes potential safety hazards, offers suggestions, takes measures to protect the patients taking into consideration each patient's developmental stages and reports any needed repairs.
· Is aware of the Joint Commission National Resident Safety Goals and applies them in their daily nursing care. The incumbent will also assist the nurse with new employee orientation.
· Work is accomplished predominantly on the nursing unit and through escorting to various clinics or hospital areas. The physical surroundings involve working with the acute and chronically physically and mentally ill patients, which may cause discomfort related to negative verbal and physical activities from these patients.
Work Schedule: Rotating Shifts.

This position requires walking, standing, stooping, lifting, bending, pushing, turning, and at times carry heavy loads. (a.)Experience - One year of specialized as a Nursing Assistant or experience in another medical field (licensed practical nurse, health technician, hospital corpsman, etc.), performing technical and nursing skills requiring knowledge of the human physical and emotional states, therapeutic communication, and technical skill required for basic and intermediate treatment; or
(b.)Education - Successful completion of 2 years above high school in an accredited institution with courses related to nursing care, health care or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of the position, such as education in a program for psychology, psychiatric, or operating room technicians; AND
(c.)Demonstrate Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs). In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
1. Ability to provide a range of patient/resident care and contribute to the completion of the nurse care plan and recovery of patients/residents.
2. Ability to observe patients/residents' or resident's physical or emotional status and refer deviations and or problems to supervisor in a timely manner.
3. Ability to properly use equipment, materials and supplies in simple diagnostic and treatment procedures such as bladder scan, continuous passive motion device, blood glucose monitoring machine, specimen collection, etc.
4. Ability to communicate effectively with patients/residents, their families and other health professionals.
GS-5 Full Performance Level
(a.)Experience - One year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 level which demonstrates knowledge, skills and abilities that are directly related to the specific assignment? In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the professional KSAs OR
(b.)Education - Successful completion of a 4 year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to heath care or possession of a bachelor's degree; AND

1. Ability to assist in the full range of nursing care to patients/residents with physical and /or behavioral problems in a hospital, long term care or outpatient setting under the direction of a RN, LPN or LVN.

3. Ability to recognize and react to emergent patient/resident care situations and intervene while waiting for assistance. Example, recognizing need for basic life support, controlling bleeding and assisting with behavior crisis, etc.
