Functional Statement Title: Nurse Practitioner
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is assigned to Behavioral Health Service, Recovery Services, Columbus VA Ambulatory Care Center, Columbus, Ohio, and is responsible for evaluating and treating patients presenting to Recovery Services. Major duties include:
- Conducts a history and physical examination, completing a biopsychosocial assessment, formulating diagnoses and ordering diagnostic testing as appropriate in the treatment of acute and chronic care for veterans seen in Recovery Services;
- Provides a range of substance use disorder treatment services to include ambulatory detox, tobacco cessation on an individual and group therapy basis; prescribing medications including psychiatric medications, detox medications, nicotine replacement medication as well as the administration of Vivitrol;
- Collects and synthesizes patient data utilizing critical thinking skills to formulate a comprehensive plan of care. Care is provided to patients with the goal of achieving quality patient care by improving clinical outcomes, increasing continuity of care and minimizing health care costs;
- Performs data collection and analysis for the purpose of improving care to patient groups, with emphasis on HCV, HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. Data is used to maximize utilization of resources and enhancing overall patient care;
- May also be asked to provide preventative care according to standard guidelines for medical and nursing care.
Physical Requirements
This position requires heavy lifting; 45 pounds heavy carrying; 45 pounds straight pulling (4 hours); use of fingers; both hands required; walking & standing 8 hours; repeated bending 8 hours; both legs required; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; far vision correctable in one eye 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; depth perception; ability to distinguish shades of colors; hearing (aide permitted).
Transferring patients and objects may be required. The Nurse may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. May occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The Nurse must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS
- U.S. citizenship.
- Masters degree accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted licensure as a Nurse Practitioner in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
- Full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. This certification is required in Adult Psychiatric-Mental Health.
Grade Determinations
The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse I Level III - a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) and no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse II - a Master's degree in nursing and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing and meets basic requirements for appointment with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.
Preferred Experience
Preferred experience is with psychiatry, substance use disorders and tobacco cessation.

volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps,
AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic;
religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical
competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and
experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying
experience, including volunteer experience.
