The Director of Low Vision & Blind Rehabilitation Services (LVBRS) has responsibility for administrating all aspects of low vision and blind rehabilitation at the VA Portland Health Care System. This includes all functional requirements as the Vision Impairment Service Team (VIST) Coordinator, as well as all direct supervisory responsibilities for three or more Blind Rehabilitation Specialists and administrative support staff. The position requires mastery of the broad functional areas of blind and vision rehabilitation theory, practice and specialized knowledge in specific areas, including research methodology. This individual has extensive knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of blind and vision rehabilitation practice necessary to plan and direct the range of activities relating to the overall operation of the VA Portland HCS Low Vision and Blind Rehabilitation Services.
The Visual Impairment Service Team (VIST) Coordinator serves as a program coordinator and is administratively responsible for planning, developing, implementing, directing, and evaluating the Visual Impairment Service Team (VIST) program at all the VHA sites within the VA Portland HCS catchment area. The VIST Coordinator has major responsibility for the coordination of all services for visually impaired Veterans and Service members and their families. Case Management duties often include cases that are difficult and complex both in terms of the severity of the visual impairment and the presence of complicating physical and psychological factors impinging on treatment.
