The GS-9/11 may be assigned to any program area within Social Work Service and any duty station. Social Worker assumes responsibility for the provision social work services to veterans and their families receiving care at Salisbury VA Medical Center (SVAMC) or VA Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) primary care clinics and Health Care Centers (HCC). Services provided include crisis intervention, case management, clinical treatment, advocacy, educational services and coordination of linkages to other appropriate VA or community service providers and/or agencies as needed by client. This is accomplished in collaboration with other members of the interdisciplinary treatment team and other departments hospital-wide.
Incumbent is a professional social worker assigned to the SVAMC or Charlotte HCC or CBOC or Kernersville HCC or specialty clinics. The incumbent must use a high level of skill in assessing and treating the complicated biopsychosocial problems of veterans referred to the clinic social worker. The incumbent completes brief biopsychosocial assessments and provides single session or short-term, solution focused counseling with individuals and families who may be in crisis; supportive counseling, case management and referral for resources and benefits.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Grade Determinations:
GS-9 IS THE ENTRY LEVEL for the GS-185 social work series and is used for social workers with less than one year of post-MSW experience and for social workers who are not yet licensed or certified at the independent practice level. Social workers at the GS-9 level are working toward completion of prerequisites for licensure or certification.References: References: VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G39, SOCIAL WORKER QUALIFICATION STANDARD.This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.
