The incumbent is assigned to the Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Center at the Seattle VA Medical Center. This position requires a social worker who has experience at the advanced practice level working with highly complex newly injured spinal cord patients.
The Social Worker functions as an independent advanced practice professional and is responsible to provide a variety of services for Veterans, to include but not limited to:
- Independently provide clinical, psychosocial and case management services at an advanced practice level to eligible veterans and family members;
- Conduct psychosocial assessments;
- Treatment planning with other disciplines;
- Provides consultation and guidance to colleagues and staff;
- Implement the written treatment plan;
- Develops and implements methods for measuring effectiveness of social work practices and services;
- Provide Case management;
- Provide a full range of social work services within commonly accepted standards of social work practice;
- Document social work interventions and activities;
- Other Duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday Friday 8:00am4:30pm, some evenings and weekend may be required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The work may require using appropriate methods or resources to physically restrain veterans who present a danger to self or others. The work may also require accommodating the needs of physically disabled veterans. Day-to-day work involves sitting (up to 4 hours); walking (up to 4 hours); standing (up to 4 hours); and carrying light objects such as medical records.

Basic Requirements: Must be a US Citizen.
Education: Have a Masters degree in social work from a school of social work accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.
Licensure: Senior social workers must be licensed or certified by a state at the advanced practice level which included an ASWB advanced generalist or clinical examination.
Experience: Social Workers must have at least two years experience in the area of specialized social work practice. This position requires a social worker who has experience at the advanced practice level working with highly complex newly injured spinal cord patients.
Exception: There is no exception for licensure at the GS-12 level.
English Language Proficiency: Social Workers must be proficient in spoken and written English.
GRADE DETERMINATIONS: Experience, Education and Licensure. Senior Social Workers have experience that demonstrates possession of advanced practice skills and judgment. At least two years should be in an area of specialized social work practice. Senior social workers must be licensed or certified by a state at the advanced practice level which included an ASWB advanced generalist or clinical examination, unless they are grandfathered by the state in which they are licensed to practice at the advanced practice level (except for licenses issued in California, which administers its own clinical examination for advanced practice). Senior social workers may have certification or other post-masters training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship or equivalent supervised professional experience in a specialty.
GS-12: In addition to meeting all basic requirements, 1 year of professional social work experience, equivalent to the next lower grade level, under qualified social work supervision. This experience must have been in a clinical setting and must have demonstrated the potential to perform advanced assignments independently. NON-QUALIFYING EXPERIENCE: Clinical social work experience obtained prior to completion of the requirements for a Masters Degree in Social Work does not satisfy this requirement. NOTE: A clinical setting is a medical center, clinic (medical or psychiatric), a residential treatment center, or any other type of facility where social work participates in collaborative treatment and is identified with the medical profession.
Assignment: Senior Social Workers are licensed or certified to independently practice social work at an advanced level. Senior Social Workers typically practice in a major specialty treatment program area, such as a Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center or Polytrauma Network Site; a Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Center, or a national VHA referral center, such as a national Center for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or a national Transplant Center, or other program areas of equivalent scope and complexity. The Senior Social Worker is assigned administrative responsibility for clinical program development and is accountable for clinical program effectiveness and modification of service patterns. They are also assigned in settings where they have no access to social work supervision, such as CBOCs or satellite outpatient clinics. They may be assigned to work with special patient populations with highly-complex health or mental health problems requiring expert level psychosocial interventions, such as VA/DOD liaisons assigned to Military Treatment Facilities as part of seamless transition or social worker case managers in Mental Health Intensive Case Management (MHICM) programs.
FOREIGN EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: To receive credit for education completed outside the United States, you must show proof that the education has been submitted to a private organization that specialized in interpretation of foreign educational credentials and such education has been deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs.
