Wood Crafter Helpers, WG-4605-05, perform carpentry work assisting higher level employees with the construction, installation, repair and maintenance of signs of various types. They perform backcountry travel with a backpack, leading pack horse or Llamas, to deliver supplies to the backcountry. They receive instructions by work orders, sign requests, or verbally, sometimes with rough sketches, drawings, or blueprints and work with close tolerances and exactness of measurements for completing sign projects. Wood Crafter Helpers use and maintain tools and operate equipment related to the sign-making carpentry trade. Physical Effort : Moderate physical exertion is usually required, with occasional lifting and carrying of up to 100 Ibs. Work requires considerable standing, bending, kneeling, arm movement and work on ladders and scaffolding. Hiking, carrying backpack with supplies and materials three to ten miles on trails to repair and reface backcountry signs and posts. May ride a saddle horse, lead a pack horse or hike leading one or more Llamas to pack signs and tools. Trips may be up to sixteen miles into the backcountry to repair and replace signs and posts. Working Conditions: Work will be performed indoors and outdoors, under a variety of weather and conditions ranging from -25 to 90+ degrees Fahrenheit. Elevations for work assignments will range from 7,500 feet to over 12,000 feet above sea level. Incumbent will be exposed to sawdust, flying chips, splinters, bruises, strains and falls. Some fumes will be mildly toxic in confined spaces. Overnight stays in the backcountry may be required due to distance some signs are located from trailhead.
1. National Park Service (NPS) uniformed position. Employee will be required to wear a uniform and comply with NPS uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided to defray the cost of the uniform. 2. Applicants must possess a valid state driver's license. This position requires that you operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. A valid state driver's license is required. As a condition of employment, you will be required to submit a completed GSA Form 3607, Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a state sealed envelope or submitted directly by the state authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all states that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. If you are tentatively selected for employment in this position, you will be required to complete GSA Form 3607 and submit the above state issued documents. Your employment, after your tentative selection, will be contingent upon receipt of these documents in a timely manner and that those documents establish, to the satisfaction of the selecting official, that you possess a valid driver's license.

QUALIFICATIONS: To be eligible for this position, you must possess the qualifying specialized experience and/or education as well as selective factors as described in the occupational/assessment questionnaire and as outlined below. For WG: Applicants must be physically fit and, as required in Office of Personnel Management Qualifications Handbook X-118C, must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the elements listed in Section 25 of the Online Occupational Questionnaire to perform the duties of the position at the level for which they are applying. A specific length of time and experience is not required; however you must be able to demonstrate the rough experience shown in your written application, that you possess sufficient knowledge, skill and ability to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision. Examples of experience for this position include:
assisting with the layout, construction, installation, repair, and maintenance of signs of various types (metal/wood/plastic/composites). Perform carpentry work specifically related to sign maintenance, construction and stabilization. Perform wilderness travel with a backpack leading pack animals (i.e. horses, mules, llamas) to deliver tools and materials into the backcountry. Use and maintain tools and equipment associated with the carpentry trade such as table and hand saws, routers, jointers, drills, hollow mortise chisels, power or table sanders, air compressors, utility knives, carving tools, etc. to fabricate and shape various types of wood, plastic, metal and composite materials used in sign work and inlays. You must meet level 2 on the screen out factor/element and an average of level 2 on all factors/elements.
