The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is the research arm of the U.S. Department of Agriculture whose mission is finding solutions to agricultural problems of high national importance. The Pathways Student Internship Program provides students with a meaningful paid work experience in a Federal agency while still in school. Internships are open to individuals who have been accepted for enrollment or who are currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) from a qualifying educational institution on a full or half-time basis.
Salary listed in this announcement is a basic rate of pay. Locality pay will be determined based on the duty location of the position.
This appointment is not-to-exceed one (1) year, and it may be extended in increments not-to-exceed 1 year or less for up to 8 years in total, as long as the student remains eligible for the program. Upon successful completion of the internship program, students MAY be non-competitively converted to a term or permanent position; however, conversion eligibility is not an entitlement of the Student Internship Program.

As a trainee, you will perform duties that orient you to the mission of the unit assigned. You will assist and/or receive training in performing routines in support of research projects. Typical, but not all-inclusive, duties are illustrated by performance of any combination of the following in a laboratory, shop, or field setting:
Performing a variety of routine tests in accordance with established methods including setting up, adjusting and operating equipment, and recording instrument readings.
Constructing, modifying, and assembling equipment; and maintaining and repairing equipment used in conducting research experiments.
Examining equipment during operation for faults or defects, which may affect the accuracy of the data.
Determining whether the test data falls within normal limits and determining the apparent causes of deviations in the test data resulting from equipment malfunctions, observational errors, and other causes. Reporting data inconsistencies and deficiencies due to equipment and observational errors to the supervisor.
Performing computations either manually or by using computers.
Assembling and tabulating collected data.
Maintaining work area and related equipment in a proper and safe manner; maintaining supplies; and cleaning and organizing equipment and supplies.
