The primary work schedule for this temporary seasonal position will be full time, however due to, special projects, and/or special events, this position may be changed to a part-time or intermittent schedule during short periods of employment at the agency's discretion.

Area Information:
Jewel Cave National Monument is located in the southern Black Hills of southwestern South Dakota. It lies approximately 13 miles west of Custer, SD and 24 miles east of Newcastle, WY. It is most noted for its significant underground resources, as well as being recognized as the second longest cave in the world. Its surface features showcase a forested landscape, interspersed with open meadows and wildland fire scars. Limited shopping and medical facilities are available in the gateway communities; however, full service amenities are available in Rapid City, SD, which is located around 50 miles northeast of Custer. Climates range from below freezing in the winter season to mid-90s during the summer months.
Mount Rushmore National Memorial is located three miles west of Keystone, South Dakota, in the Black Hills of southwestern South Dakota. Housing for purchase or rent, schools, medical and dental facilities, churches of most faiths, and shopping are available in Rapid City, 25 miles northeast of Park Headquarters, and in nearby Hill City and Custer.

The incumbent cleans stools, lavatories, and sanitary receptacles and maintains a stock of cleaning supplies in restrooms, supply rooms; and custodial closets. The position responsibilities also include: Cleans public use buildings and restrooms; washes windows and doors; and mops and power buffs floors. Waxes, sweeps, and polishes metal surfaces. Dusts and vacuums display units and empties ashtrays. Collects and empties garbage cans. The incumbent will mix cleaning chemicals for proper cleaning and sanitizing solutions. Operates power-cleaning equipment designed to clean granite floor areas in buildings. Operates carpet equipment to include vacuums and carpet shampooing equipment. Moves and arranges furniture as directed. Washes and waxes cars and trucks by hand or using powered buffer.
The incumbent may operate powered riding or push lawn mowers, which may require heavy physical effort and clears small to medium size trees using handsaws, clippers and weed-trimmers. The incumbent also operates power cleaning equipment on walk areas. Shovels or uses snow blowing equipment. Sweeps and picks up litter from sidewalks, trails, roads, and grounds. Uses shovels, rakes, tampers and other hand tools to dig ditches and trenches, slope landscape, excavate/fill holes and finish grade landscaped areas.
The incumbent assists higher graded employees in a variety of maintenance duties to include: painting, masonry, carpentry, mechanics, and sculpture maintenance. Helps mix and pour concrete and performs minor carpentry such as repairing shelves, screens or doors. Loads and unloads heavy boxes, bulky supplies, and materials to and from trucks and dollies. Moves heavy boxes, cartons, or luggage by hand, hand-truck, or dolly and opens crates and boxes using crowbars and cuts bands using shears. Stacks boxes and cartons where directed. Neatly arranges storage areas for easy access of materials. The incumbent will operate standard pickups, ATV's and possibly other vehicles for park operations.
The incumbent is required to wear the NPS uniform and follow grooming standards in accordance with NPS and Memorial uniform requirements.
Physical Requirements: The nature of position requires considerable standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, bending, and crawling. At times, duties must be completed while working on ladders and in cramped and other uncomfortable positions. Extensive movement of the arms, stretching, reaching, carrying, and climbing is required to fully perform the duties of this position. Incumbent must have the capability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted and 100 pounds with assistance.
Work Environment: Work is performed indoors and outdoors in temperatures ranging from 15 degrees below zero in winter to 110 degrees above zero in the summer. Incumbent is exposed to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions and disinfectants. Due to incumbent's interactions with visitors, incumbent must present himself or herself in a professional manner at all times.
Routine Vehicle Operator: Applicants must possess a valid state driver's license. This position requires that you operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. As a condition of employment, you will be required to submit a completed GSA Form 3607, Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record.
