GAO's work is designed to address four goals:

As a Financial Management and Assurance (FMA) fall intern, you will learn how to conduct federal audits and apply that knowledge as part of a team. Financial Auditors participate in a wide range of engagements with the overall objective of strengthening accountability for the Federal government's assets and operations. They perform financial audits and analyses, promote financial management best practices, assess internal controls, and identify and support improvements in a variety of financial areas affecting program performance. You will assist GAO auditors in planning and conducting audits of agency programs and operations. You will collect appropriate data, analyze the data, develop data-based findings and conclusions, and present the information both orally and in writing to diverse audiences.
The anticipated start date for these intern positions is late September 2017. Student interns may have an opportunity for a permanent position based on a successful intern experience (comprised of a minimum of 400 hours) and successful completion of degree requirements. The ability to convert to a GAO permanent or term appointment with 400 hours of work experience acquired through GAO’s internship program is applicable to GAO ONLY.
The pay for these intern positions is at the grade 7 step 1.
Engagement planning and designing phase: Contributes to the development of the engagement approach including participating in the preparation of the engagement design and implementation plan, conducts background research on subject matter and sets up engagement documentation.
Data gathering: Assists in a variety of tasks, including developing interview questions designed to elicit pertinent data and assess available sources of data, conducting interviews to gather appropriate information, taking thorough interview notes, and preparing written summaries.
Engagement research data analysis: Assists in analyzing responses received from interviews and other evidence that has been collected from various sources. Applies analytical methods to determine patterns, trends, or irregularities and assists in assessing the reliability of evidence. Participates in synthesizing information and draws preliminary conclusions. Periodically presents findings to engagement team members, management, and stakeholders.
Engagement reporting: Drafts all or portions of audit summaries that support report segments. Participates in developing documentation to support audit reporting and assists with the coordination of responses to agency comments and the preparation of final products.
Assists with completing and archiving engagement documentation.
