The incumbent will perform duties in all areas of the Inpatient Section. The position is an evening shift Pharmacy Technician, who, under the authority of the Chief, Pharmacy Service, is directly involved in all aspects of the preparation and dispensing of drug orders and prescription items.
Incumbent will serve as a pharmacy technician primarily evenings, but they may rotate through the various shifts: days, evenings and night shift. The technician will effectively perform a full range of inpatient drug distribution duties. These include assisting the inpatient pharmacy IV program, stocking medication carts, delivering medications to the floors, Omnicell and OR/Clinic replenishment, monitoring expiration dates of pharmacy stock and nursing units, and replenishing crash carts. The technician will assist the pharmacist in prioritizing, processing and delivery of all IV and PO doses to maintain the consistency of overall pharmacy services both to inpatients and emergency room patients. The technician will assists with the stocking of drugs, solutions, supplies and will be responsible for ordering IV and irrigation solutions for the pharmacy.
Incumbent is responsible for processing and filling orders for scheduled and non-scheduled federal legend drugs and supplies, including the preparation of IV admixtures. Responsible for training of technicians, or students assigned to employee tour. Assists with procurement of pharmaceutical supplies as needed and works closely with patients and healthcare staff to meet the needs of the customer.
Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift/carry pharmaceutical supplies weighing 50 lbs. or less; bending and stooping; and regular and recurring physical exertion involving walking and standing for prolonged periods.
Preferred Experience: Experience working in an inpatient pharmacy preparing Chemotherapy, using sterile compounding skills in accordance with USP 797.
Work Schedule: Based on the needs of the service. This position requires incumbent to rotate through all pharmacy programs and rotation through all shifts (including evening, day, weekend, holiday, and potentially midnight). The incumbent will be required to work tours of duty as assigned. Tour is 2:30-11pm weekdays with occasional holiday and weekend coverage.

Physical Requirements: A pre-placement physical examination is required for all full-time, part-time and intermittent employees identified by VA Directive and Handbook 5019. The pre-placement physical examination shall be completed prior to appointment to determine the physical and mental fitness of candidates for appointment in VA. The examination will be concerned with the mental and physical ability of the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the proposed assignment and will include requisite laboratory and other screening as required by Federal regulatory agencies.
Basic Requirements:
Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.)
Education or Experience. A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience.
Certification. Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at this grade level.
English Language Proficiency. Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English
Experience. One year experience at the next lower level (GS-5). Examples of duties at the next lower grade level include but are not limited to...
·Ability to operate and care for automated dispensing devices and equipment.
·Knowledge of, and ability to perform, aseptic technique.
·Knowledge of basic inventory procedures.
·Knowledge of pharmacy information systems.
