The major duties of the Biological Technician (Vegetation) at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore are to lead a crew to conduct inventory and monitoring of native and non-native plants; resource impact assessment; non-native plant control using chemical and mechanical techniques; native plant restoration and greenhouse maintenance. Operates government vehicles on an incidental basis.
Physical Requirements: The work of these positions requires physical exertion such as regular and recurring walking, hiking or climbing over wet, rough, uneven, sandy, or rocky surfaces; carrying heavy loads such as backpacks and tools weighing up to 30 pounds while hiking several miles.
Area Information: Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is located in Michigans Upper Peninsula on the south shore of Lake Superior between the communities of Munising (population 2,500) and Grand Marais. The duty station for these positions is Munising, MI. Government housing may be available for rent. Amenities in Munising include basic shopping, medical facilities, and K-12 schools. Summers are generally warm and pleasant. The winter season may extend from October to May and is often characterized by sub-zero temperatures and seasonal snowfall in excess of 140 inches. The area is rich in outdoor sporting activities including hunting, fishing, hiking, boating, biking, camping, and skiing.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
To be eligible for this position, you must possess the following specialized experience and/or education before the closing date of this announcement:
Specialized Experience - one year of specialized experience at the GS-5 level or equivalent. Specialized experience demonstrates that you are able to perform successfully the duties of this position. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include, but are not limited to: include assisting in research work in a greenhouse or other controlled environment, performing plant surveys; assisting in site restoration work; removing non-native plant species; identifying and monitoring plant species'; etc.
Experience may have been gained in the private or public sector and may have been paid or unpaid, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps, Americorps) and other organizations (e.g. professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
OR
Education - Successful completion of one full year of graduate level study (18 semester hours or equivalent) that directly relates to the position such as in plant or botany-related subjects such as botany, ecology, plant ecology, natural resources, natural resources management, wetlands management, habitat management, horticulture, plant propagation, or invasive plant control. OR an internship that is directly related to the duties of this position and this must be documented on your transcript to receive credit. NOTE: If you indicate that you are qualified based upon education, you MUST provide a copy of your transcripts or a list of college courses which includes your name, the school name and address, title and course number of each course, # of semester/quarter hours for each course, and grade for each course plus your class ranking and/or grade point average.
