The major duties of the Biological Technician (Vegetation) at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore are inventory and monitoring of native and non-native plants; resource impact assessment; non-native plant control using chemical and mechanical techniques; native plant restoration and greenhouse maintenance. Operates government vehicles on an incidental basis.
Physical Requirements: The work of these positions requires physical exertion such as regular and recurring walking, hiking or climbing over wet, rough, uneven, sandy, or rocky surfaces; carrying heavy loads such as backpacks and tools weighing up to 30 pounds while hiking several miles.
Area Information: Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is located in Michigans Upper Peninsula on the south shore of Lake Superior between the communities of Munising (population 2,500) and Grand Marais. The duty station for these positions is Munising, MI. Government housing may be available for rent. Amenities in Munising include basic shopping, medical facilities, and K-12 schools. Summers are generally warm and pleasant. The winter season may extend from October to May and is often characterized by sub-zero temperatures and seasonal snowfall in excess of 140 inches. The area is rich in outdoor sporting activities including hunting, fishing, hiking, boating, biking, camping, and skiing.

4. Ability to use and maintain equipment and tools.
5. Skill in field data entry and use of GPS units.
6. Knowledge of traditional field navigation utilizing map and compass.
7. Physical ability to hike long distances over rough terrain.
