Under the guidance and assistance of the aircraft commander/flight instructor, operates aircraft to become a fully qualified, mission-ready Navigator in unit type aircraft. The nature of flying activities which the incumbent must master is dictated by war plans, enemy threats, classified intelligence gathering, and gaining MAJCOM training requirements. Actual tasks include low level flying (down to 100 feet above ground level (AGL) and up to 540 Knots for fighter type aircraft, down to 300 feet AGL and 210-290 Knots for airlift/tanker type aircraft) and other degrees of hazard. Combat maneuvers, threat avoidance, and aerial flight survival must be firmly understood. Night aerial refueling (airplane typical) must be accomplished. Bombing, air-to-ground and air-to-air gunnery, air combat maneuvering, and other requirements exist for fighter organizations. Use of night vision devices, flying in mountainous terrain, performing combat assault landings on unprepared runways, and accomplishing aerial delivery of cargo/personnel (airplane typical) are required. Receives instruction and flight experience in the use of instruments, radio and navigation equipment, in-flight emergency operating procedures such as electrical, hydraulic, or engine failures, takeoff and landing procedures, penetration to landing areas, combat maneuvering procedures, weapon delivery procedures, and other exercises dictated by the unit aircraft and associated missions.

In order to meet the minimum qualifications for this NAVIGATOR position, you must meet the following criteria.
GENERAL EXPERIENCE:
Experience which provided a working knowledge of the navigation systems and navigational instruments of the assigned airframe.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
Must have at least 36 months experience, education or training that has required you to obtain information on type of mission, weather and intelligence data, and special instructions; experience preparing navigation flight plans; experience that provided a knowledge of proper readings and operations of navigational systems. Experience that shows your ability to test and inspect the operation of compasses, navigation systems, or radio and radar equipment; experience utilizing various navigational methods and aids to accomplish flying missions. Experience computing the effect of various factors during flight to establish present course and project balance of course and ability to train, evaluate and certify proficiency and competency of lower graded personnel AND you must have completed the necessary hours required for your current airframe. (ex. 1000 hours total navigation time which includes 200 hours time in the C-130).
KSA's:
Candidates will be evaluated on the basis of the KSA's listed below. Applicants are encouraged to address the KSA's in their application or resume or by submitting a supplemental statement with their application. Written response to each KSA will ensure that specialized experience criteria is recognized and credited.
1. Knowledge of the methods of air navigation (e.g., dead reckoning, celestial, or radio) appropriate to the flight training mission, and skill to apply this knowledge in planning and performing the navigation portion of the mission.
2. Knowledge of aircraft systems and equipment related to the navigation function, and skill to operate systems, cross-check information, and translate navigational data into useful and reliable information for the pilot.
3. Knowledge of basic aerodynamics and the effect of various forces and conditions on flight operations, and skill in considering these factors in planning missions and during flight.
4. Knowledge of methods of instruction and the navigational requirements of assigned missions, and skill in using this knowledge in ground training and in-flight instruction of navigators.
MILITARY REQUIREMENTS: Selected candidates will be required to be in a compatible military grade and assignment prior to the effective date of placement.

Length of service or experience will only be used when there is a clear relationship with quality of performance or when necessary to break ties when all other ratings are equal.
Following the determination of basic eligibility of the candidates as outlined in DMNA PAM 690-4, Chapter 5, qualified applicants will be referred to the selection official in the following sequence:
1. Category I: All excepted service technicians in the New York Army National Guard for Army technician vacancies and all excepted service technicians in the New York Air National Guard for Air technician vacancies, working at the location specified in the job announcement where the vacancy exists.
2. Category II: All currently employed excepted service technicians in either the New York Army or New York Air National Guard.
3. Category III: Qualified members of the New York National Guard (Army or Air), to include AGR personnel and temporary and Indefinite technicians, or other individuals who are willing to become members of the New York Army or Air National Guard.
