This is a seasonal position within the Division of Resource Management at Ocmulgee National Monument. Primary duties include removal of exotic plants using manual and chemical methods. Other responsibilities include inventories and monitoring for other invasive taxa such as insects, animals and aquatics. The employee performs exotic plant control through the use of herbicides, sprayers, chainsaws and manual hand tools. The employee makes educated decisions to resolve problems in the field without direct supervision. He/she is expected to collect data using a GPS unit and must be able to identify exotic plants and native plants in the field. Utilizes a variety of computer programs to compile, store, retrieve, analyze and report data. Consolidates, analyzes and provides reports on exotic species data, both historic and current. It is essential that the incumbent has a good attitude and a strong willingness to work in a crew setting and assist with a variety of park tasks, both in the field and in the office.

Ocmulgee National Monument, a Native American cultural site consists of 700 acres with an annual visitation of 150k people. The park which is located in Macon, Georgia has a population of over 100k people. Macon, situated in central Georgia is 80 miles south of Atlanta, GA and 120 miles southwest of Augusta, GA. The Georgia mountain and coastal areas are all within a 3 hour drive of Macon. Macon has plentiful amenities such as schools, medical services, shopping, dining and recreational activities that you would typically find in metropolitan area. With over six universities and college in the area, Macon has excellent educational opportunities for higher learning. Macon weather is moderate year round with summer highs typically in the 90's with lows in the 70's. Winter highs are in the 60's with lows in the 40's.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level. Specialized experience for this position is work involving one or more aspects of vegetation management such as: performing basic vegetation inventories, studies, and surveys; participating in site rehabilitation through soil preparation, native seed dispersal, live planting and weeding; applying/performing a variety of manual, mechanical, chemical, and/or bio-control methods in planned management of exotics (non-natives), native species, and/or weeds; etc.

Education: Successfully completed at least four years of education above high school (120 semester hour or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelors degree with major study or 24 semester hours in any combination of course work in a related field (such as in biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics, or other directly-related subject matter); and at least 6 semester hours of this coursework was in plant or botany-related subjects.
OR
Combination of Experience and Education: Have an equivalent combination of education and experience. NOTE: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to l year of specialized experience. For example, I have 6 months of the specialized experience described in A above (50% of the experience requirement), and 3 years of college study from an accredited institution (50% of the qualifying education) which included at least 12 semester hours of related coursework as specified in B above of which at least 3 semester hours was in plant or botany-related subjects (50% of the related coursework required).

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work involves significant amounts of time outside under a variety of conditions often with extreme heat and humidity. Good physical conditioning and proper hydration is imperative for performing duties safely. Field work will involve hiking through dense vegetation and wetlands area. Must be able to lift and carry up to 40 lbs. and operate UTV's to access work locations.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed predominantly in the field with occasional office work. The field work performed involves regular and recurring exposure to various weather conditions and terrain, poisonous plants, biting insects, and wild animals. Office work mainly consists of data entry for completed field work and administrative needs.
WORK SCHEDULE: 40 hours per week (Monday-Friday) with occasional weekend/evening work associated with NPS special park events.
