The Inpatient Pharmacy Technician enters pertinent drug and clinical information into the patient's medication profile for subsequent review by a pharmacist for accuracy. Incumbent also reads and interprets inpatient unit-dose medication orders. They obtain medication in the proper strength and dosage form; determine proper amount; affix appropriate labels according to established unit-dose procedures and protocols, and dispense medication into unit-dose patient cassettes, or, after pharmacist verification, to the appropriate patient care area.
The incumbent reads, interprets and performs relevant calculations for intravenous piggybacks, large volume parenterals, and unit of use syringes. They prepare sterile admixture products, including chemotherapy, in accordance with current USP 797 standards. They affix proper labels, and, after pharmacist verification, dispenses to appropriate patient care area. They also calculate, compound and/or reconstitute oral or external medications (non-sterile).
The incumbent also assists with inventory management and ordering of medicines. During inventory manager's absence, they coordinate and provide acting inventory manager with daily inpatient inventory needs. This also includes, ensuring emergency carts are replenished and prepared for pharmacist review.
The incumbent is responsible for monitoring temperature of Pharmacy's refrigerators and maintains temperature logs as necessary. They assist supervisor in training new pharmacy technician staff. They also provide training to existing staff so that competencies are maintained. The incumbent answers and triages telephone calls to the appropriate sections and/or staff.
WORK SCHEDULE: Full-time evening shifts: Rotation through all shifts, plus weekends & holidays. Full-time varied Shifts: Rotation through all shifts plus weekends and holidays.

Physical Requirements: Principle duties of this position require repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g., preparing prescriptions, use of a computer keyboard, etc.). May require lifting and carrying light loads (up to 44lbs.), including boxes, equipment, medical supplies, stock boxes etc.; stooping or kneeling (e.g., to pick up items from the floor, remove and replace items on lower shelves, and to file documents in lower file drawers, etc.); sitting, walking, or standing for long periods of time (4-8 hours). Ability to operate automation. Normal ranges of hearing and vision are required to perform work and communicate effectively. An ability to perform tasks requiring rapid mental and muscular coordination functions simultaneously is necessary. Must be physically capable of operating various types of equipment used for the job.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
a. Citizenship. Must be a citizen of the United States.
b. Education or Experience. A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience.
c. Certification. Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above.
d. English Language Proficiency. Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English.
GRADE DETERMINATION:
Creditable Experience. To be creditable, the experience must have required the use of knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics associated with the scope of pharmacy technician practice.
GS-5 Pharmacy Technician (Next lower Level)
Education or Experience. Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included at least 24 semester hours of courses related to pharmacy or pharmacy technology; successful completion of pertinent specialized training courses in pharmaceutical and pharmacy services while serving in the Armed Forces is creditable on a month-for-month basis up to the 1 year of experience required for the GS-5 level; or at least 1 year of experience at the next lower level that demonstrates the core competencies (KSAs) described at the GS-4 level.
Assignments. This is the full performance level for pharmacy technicians. Employees at this grade level serve as staff pharmacy technicians receiving little guidance from more experienced staff members for more complex patients and procedures, and require minimal supervision.

Experience. One year experience at the next lower level, and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level.
Certification. PTCB certification is required at this grade level and above.
Assignments. Pharmacy technicians may be assigned to any area of the pharmacy including expanded distributive function assignments; for example assignment as team leaders for specific process improvement teams involving technical areas or performing more highly complex duties including preparation of oncology agents for clinical pharmacy specialists. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.
