    Summary

    These are TEMPORARY appointments, not-to-exceed 1039 hours of work in a service year. The appointment will provide full-time, 40 hours per week employment.  Appointments may be terminated at any time, may be extended, or work schedules may be changed to part-time depending on funding and work availability.  Anticipated work period for these positions is May through October.

    POSITION LOCATION:  Shenandoah National Park is located in Virginia, approximately 90 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. The park consists of approximately 197,000 acres of land, including 80,000 acres designated as wilderness. It also contains 105 miles of Skyline Drive and 101 miles of the Appalachian Trail.  Annual visitation is around 1.3 million, which has direct and extensive economic impact on the surrounding area (eight counties and nine municipalities). The park's natural, cultural and recreational resources are of vital interest to local and regional businesses, political leaders, conservation and outdoor recreation organizations, and the Commonwealth of Virginia.     Responsibilities

    Major Duties: This position is assigned to the Roads and Grounds unit within the Division of Maintenance at Shenandoah National Park with the duty station at Big Meadows Maintenance Area. The primary purpose of this position is:

    • To maintain the views of the parks many overlooks by removing woody vegetation that will eventually grow into the viewpoint. The position will assist the park's tree worker and tractor operators by applying herbicide to the vistas to slow new growth. This position will hike up and down steep mountainous slopes carrying a chain saw and associated gear to cut brush, small trees, and anything impacting the view point.
    • Assist the park mason in headwall/rock wall repair for the many stone features along Skyline Drive.  The associated duties are to maintain drainage features and repair pavement defects along Skyline Drive. This position will be utilizing a tar pot/kettle to crack seal various pavement defects along Skyline Drive and it's developed areas, as well as pothole patching and various pavement marking projects.
    • This position will operate light dump trucks up to 10,000 GVW, crew cab utility trucks and pickups with four wheel drive and manual transmissions.

    Physical Demands:  Work is outside and inside, with exposure to hot, humid and/or extremely cold weather.  Frequently lifts, carries, and moves objects weighing 80 to 100 pounds (such as downed trees, rocks, furniture, wheelbarrows of cement, etc).  Frequently experiences moderate to heavy exertion in the use and transport of hand and power tools, lawn mowers, and weed eaters when participating in vista clearing operations.  Requires hiking up and down steep mountainous terrain carrying gear and tools such as chainsaws.  Heavy exertion is required to carry and roll rocks and logs, to move rocks and tree stumps weighing several tons using rock bars and hoist where equipment cannot reach.  Work requires extensive walking, standing, bending, kneeling, twisting, pushing, pulling, and working in awkward positions on uneven terrain.  Requires wearing protective personal equipment such as chaps, respirator, hearing protection, clothing and eye protection; and you must meet physical requirements to do so.
