The National Park Service's (NPS) Internship Program provides students majoring in history, or related fields, (see qualifications section for more information) an opportunity to gain practical work experience and explore Federal careers while still in school. This program is a component of the National Park Service's Pathways Internship Program, which is designed to prepare you for a career as an Historian or related occupations in the Federal service. You will assist other Historians in the Heritage Documentation Program, in gathering information and producing archival records documenting historic sites and structures of architectural, landscape and technological significance throughout the country.

As a Pathways Intern (Historian) you will perform the following functions:
· Plan, organize, and conduct historical research studies of historic sites and structures.
· Review and edit manuscripts, and architectural/engineering and historical documentation, prepared by others, for incorporation into overall projects.
·Perform research on historic sites and structures through the use of standard reference works and primary source materials available in records collections and libraries, on-site evaluation, and through contacts at the Federal and state levels, and through private sources.
· Writes architectural/engineering and historical data pages, including detailed architectural/engineer descriptions and historical information, to accompany measured drawing and photographs for deposit in the HABS/HAER/HALS collection in the Library of Congress.
At the grade 9 level, your work is performed under close supervision. Assignments are done in phases, and work is reviewed while in progress. You will be following templates and examples in the accomplishment of work, and assignments are tailored to acquaint you with the standards of the Department and the NPS, and to make you fully proficient in the work of the organization.

MUST MEET BASIC QUALIFICATIONS AS INDICATE BELOW:Possession of a master's degree, or two full years of graduate education equivalent to a master's degree in the subject fields listed above, meets all requirements for the grade 9 level; however, you must also meet the program eligibility requirements to be considered for this internship.

Possession of a Bachelor degree in the fields listed above and at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of qualifying specialized experience at the GS-7 level include duties such as: identifying and determining the facts regarding the evolution and construction of historic structures and sites; documenting the chain of ownership and history of a group of historic buildings in a historic district; performing a study involving the architectural history of the United States or the history of technology or landscape architecture studies; or participating in a cultural resource inventory program.
Basic Requirements
Education Requirements: You must have a minimum of a BA degree in history, or related field, which included at least 18 semester hours in history. You must be currently enrolled in a degree seeking program above the bachelor's level in history, or related field. Graduate education in the social sciences or humanities may also be credited provided your study included training in historical research methodology, or your thesis approached the subject from an historical viewpoint and used professional historical research methodology and techniques in its preparation.
