The National Park Service's (NPS) Internship Program, provides students enrolled in architecture or directly related fields of studies, an opportunity to gain practical work experience and explore Federal careers while still in college. This program is a component of the National Park Service's Pathways Internship Program, which is designed to prepare you for a career as an architect or related occupations in the Federal service. You will assist members of a multi-disciplinary team of architects, landscape architects, engineers, historians and photographers in the Heritage Documentation Program, in the preparation of detailed measurements and interpretative drawings for inclusion in the HABS/HAER/HALS collection at the Library of Congress.

Under the close supervision of a senior project leader, will participate in a variety of duties relating to the development of measured and interpretative drawings of historic buildings, structures and related features.This will involve the evaluation of drawings at all stages of completion in the context of varying field conditions, and their integration with other products of the surveys, such as written histories or large-format photographs. You will be completing work in conformance with the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS), the Historic American Engineers Records (HAER) and the Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS) standards. Your work product will be reviewed with particular concern for factual accuracy and completeness, organization and the clarity of graphic work, validity of judgement, and ease of interpretation.

Program Requirements: You must be accepted for enrollment and attending college or other technical certification program to be eligible for consideration as a Pathways Intern. Basic Qualification Requirements:
To qualify for the GS-5 you must: Possess a bachelor's degree in architecture, or related field, in a 4 year program, or 120 credit hours if enrolled in a 5 year program, from an accredited college or university that included: 60 semester hours of course work in architecture or related disciplines of which at least (1) 30 semester hours were in architectural design, and (2) 6 semester hours were in each of the following: structural technology, properties of materials and methods of construction, and environmental control systems. OR
Combination of Experience and Education: an applicant lacking a bachelor's degree, or 120 credits in architecture must have 1 year of experience in an architect's office or in architectural work for each year short of graduation.
