This position has an intermittent work schedule with no set duty hours or days. The incumbent will be on call as a back-up Captain. This position is located at Voyageurs National Park, International Falls, MN.

Who May Apply:  US Citizens contiguous to the area ONLY! Applicants must have maintained a permanent and exclusive residence contiguous to the area. The applicant must document that their place of residence for the last two (2) years lies within the boundary of the Voyageurs National Park, and the applicant must be dependent for livelihood primarily upon employment available within the Voyageurs National Park.

Area Information: Voyageurs National Park is a unique water-based park, comprised of 218,000 gorgeous acres of water and glacier carved, pine studded islands.  The park is a four season destination, accessible by motorboats, kayaks, canoes, houseboats, snowshoes, cross country skis and snow machines.  There are numerous hiking trails for beginners and for the most adventurous of hikers!  Have you ever driven your vehicle on "hard water"?  You can in Voyageurs, as winter ice roads are plowed and maintained on some of the lake surfaces within the park. It's just another way to experience one of America's most treasured national parks. 

The park is nestled in the Minnesota Arrowhead Region, adjacent to the Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness Area and the Quetico.  There are four lake gateways into Voyageurs, including Rainy Lake, Lake Kabetogama, Ash River Trail and Crane Lake.  International Falls is the full service gateway community at the north entrance, offering a hospital, two medical clinics, shopping, school district, community college, movie theater, bowling alley, community center and a variety of churches.  International Falls also serves as the gateway to Canada, so those who are visiting Voyageurs may also include a day trip of sightseeing in our sister city, Fort Frances, Ontario.

Duties

For 25-ton:  Serve as a back-up boat captain in command of a 29-foot sightseeing vessel powered by a 225-hp outboard motor used to transport up to 22 paying passengers on the park interpretive trips and charters on Kabetogama, Namakan, and Sand Point Lakes. Have full responsibilities for instructing and directing deck hands in safe operations during docking, passenger loading, navigation, and boat underway procedures. Perform daily checks, cleaning, and minor maintenance on vessel, outboard motor, and on board safety equipment. Report maintenance and repair needs in a timely way to the park's Chief of Interpretation.

For 50-ton: Serve as a back-up boat captain in command of a 59-foot sightseeing vessel powered by a two Cummins 610-hp engines used to transport up to 49 paying passengers on the park interpretive trips and charters on Rainy Lake. Have full responsibilities for instructing and directing deck hands in safe operations during docking, passenger loading, navigation, and boat underway procedures. Perform daily checks, cleaning, and minor maintenance on vessel, outboard motor, and on board safety equipment. Report maintenance and repair needs in a timely way to the park's Chief of Interpretation.
