    The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) supports the Congress in meeting its constitutional responsibilities to legislate, appropriate, and oversee the Federal government for the benefit of the American people. The GAO, commonly referred to as the investigative arm of Congress, or the congressional watchdog, is independent and nonpartisan. The GAO assists Congress in making informed decisions by providing information on policy and program issues, as well as by providing recommendations to make government more effective and responsive.

    The anticipated start date for these intern positions is May/June 2017. Interns may have an opportunity for a permanent position based on a successful intern experience (comprised of a minimum of 400 hours) and successful completion of degree requirements. The ability to convert to a permanent or term appointment with 400 hours of work experience is contingent upon budgetary conditions and staffing needs at the time of eligibility.

    Interns will work on various assignments within one of GAO's Administrative Professional and Support Staff (APSS) offices:

    Chief Administrative Office (CAO): Interns will work with internal stakeholders to collect and analyze data to spot trends and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of internal GAO operations for the Chief Administrative Officer/Chief Financial Officer administrative functions.

    Congressional Relations (CR): Interns will identify and monitor the status of legislation that mentions GAO or requires GAO to prepare a report; prepare records of reports required by statute or requested by Members of Congress for review by GAO’s Executive Committee; use GAO databases and records management systems; conduct research regarding GAO’s impact on legislation and Congressional oversight; and other legislative research as necessary.

    Human Capital Office (HCO): Interns will provide assistance to GAO employees in a variety of human capital operational areas to include: payroll operations, recruitment and staffing activities, records management, performance management, compensation and leave policies and programs, employee relations activities and benefits programs, diversity and inclusion efforts, and/or budget and contracting matters.

    Infrastructure Operations (IO): Interns will perform analytical studies focused on evaluating the effectiveness of various business operations, processes, and programs in the subject areas of facility management, security and emergency management, and records management. Facility management encompasses projects related to operating and maintaining a historic building and using AutoCAD. Security and emergency management includes disciplines such as Information Security, Personnel Security, and Protection Services in effort to secure and safeguard a federal facility. Records management consists of records inventories, dispositions, transfers and other projects to ensure effective and systematic control of agency records.

    Financial Management and Business Operations (FMBO): Interns will be responsible for maintaining, organizing, interpreting, and reviewing accounting documents and data for record management purposes; leading or conducting studies and assessments of GAO’s current best practices; analyzing and reviewing data to ensure consistency; conducting analysis of GAO/FMBO’s best practices, balanced scorecard, metrics, and strategic key efforts etc; conducting surveys and studies and preparing reports of best practice trends; and assisting with the FY17 internal control testing and results analysis.

    Learning Center (LC): Interns will provide assistance and learning development and delivery such as assisting with classroom logistics, course development activities, adjunct faculty program and recognition, course and infrastructure evaluations and analysis, and special projects including reviewing and analyzing learning programs and documenting Standard Operating Procedures.

    Professional Development Program (PDP): Interns will assist with recruiting and hiring activities, PDP learning series, updating PDP program manuals, conducting program analysis, and other duties as assigned.

    Public Affairs (PA): Interns will assist with the product line steering committee and working groups; reaching new communications platforms and new features of existing communications platforms.

    Strategic Planning and External Liaison (SPEL): Interns will support SPEL programs to include: advancing the use of foresight tools in support of GAO’s strategic planning process; managing GAO’s relationship with the International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI) and other national audit officers; and building capacity in the domestic and international audit communities through programs such as the International Auditors' Fellowship Program and the National Intergovernmental Audit Forums. A possible project would be helping SPEL build a continuous environmental scanning program as part of GAO’s wider strategic foresight efforts.

    Continuous Process Improvement (CPI): Interns will supports a variety of process improvement and change management activities including gathering and analyzing data, helping facilitate and document results of focus groups, creating written communications, and assisting with creating and documenting business processes and procedures.
